Mad Max Interceptor engine coming out

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I did a little on Sunday and I did some more today. All I need to do next is drop the starter and take out the rest of the bolts on the bell housing. In the pic you still see the power steering pump in place, but it's out now. I just haven't taken any pictures today.

I believe this could have an adverse affect on engine cooling. It was a surprise......a surprise that I didn't have any leaks here.

Awesome man!! Do you have the new motor already lined up and ready to go in?

The engine is one of the last things I'll be working on as I am doing what would be called a "frame off" restoration if the car had a frame. It will be a while before I have money to spend on engine parts. I am just going to rebuild this one. It has the best factory heads ever made for a Cleveland engine, the venerable Aussie closed chambered 2V heads.

Here's pics of it coming out. I took it out last night. I also had to take off the intake and a head to find exactly what I have. It could have had the 4V heads and it also could have been only a 302C, which they made in Australia. But I was real happy to find I have a true 351 Cleveland with the 2V closed chambered heads.

Look at the size of those intake ports! And this is just the 2V heads. They actually look smaller than they are because of all the carbon build-up. Also notice the angle of the pushrods because of the Cleveland's canted valves.

I cleaned up around one of the combustion chambers so that you can see it is a real closed combustion chamber. Look how black everything is. Running a little rich I would say?

Here's the empty engine compartment of a right hand drive car with the steering and brakes on the wrong side. What looks like red or brown is actually the original color of the car, a brown metallic. I don't know why some of it photographed reddish. Might be the metallic.

Are you going to be painting the engine too or just cleaning it?

When I get to the engine, I am doing the body first, I will be completely overhauling it and building it up. Here's a couple pictures of the last engine I did. The one for this car will not be as flashy. In the movie the mechanic says he built it with "...a piece from here and a piece from there", so it will have that kind of look.

Can't believe I missed this thread Steve... any updates on this? Any more photos of the finished project?

Finished?? This will be a couple years in the making. I haven't worked on the car since I started this thread. Being winter I will be doing some work on the Mustang, which is driveable, so I want to do all the mods to it in the winter.

I can post a couple more pictures, though no more progress.

I spent all of December promoting my company and now I am dealing with loads of homework in two college classes I have twice a week while working 60 - 74 hours a week. I also have to do some designs for a client, I have a screenplay that I need to do some storyboarding for in preparation of shooting a trailer for it, and I need to polish the screenplay just a little more in preparation of submitting it. Somewhere along the way I will be doing the work on the Mustang (front suspension rebuild, Granada disc brake swap, power booster and dual master cylinder conversion), and I may be going out of town in March to shoot some footage for a friend that will be used in an internationally distributed video, but I can't give details. Oh, and Wednesday I am taking my wife to Pickwick and Frolic/Hilarities for a dinner and show for Valentines Day.

Holy Crap!!! So yeah, a few irons in the fire.....and I am even forgetting a couple others.

lol I guess I'm jumping on the waggon a little to soon. Looks like your keeping real busy though. I can see why you haven't had all that much time to work with it.

cant wait to see this when it gets done that movie was awesome.....and road warrior was great as well but beyond thunderdome(hated it)

Posted by: Aussie XAXB

Yup, we try not to talk about Thunder Dome among the Mad Max replica ranks.

As soon as I get done with the custom brakes on the wife's Mustang I have a head gasket to replace on my daughter's car.........and THEN I will have some time to work on my car.

I'll post pics of progress as it occurs. In the meantime you can click on the link in my sig to see the whole story on my car and how I got started in doing this. There is also a ton of other info. My free webspace is full so whenever I am ready to update the place I need to pay for more space. I think I had 20 MB of free space there.
