gears?

i am kinda new at this, just wondering what is the benifit or advantage to installing new gears on a mustang, i hear all this stuff about 3.73 gears and all this other stuff, could somebody explain what the number means and what it does to the car?
thanks

It's like a bike with multiple gears.

When you shift into the lower gears, it takes more time to get up to speed.

But when you are in the taller gears, it's easy as hell to accelerate.

so a car with a higher gear ratio will be slower at like 0-60, but once there it will get up to 60-100 faster, is this correct?

True, lower geared cars have an advantage at higher speeds due to their longer gearing allowing the engine to stay in the powerband longer.

Picking the correct gear ratio all depends on what style driving you do. Drag racers like the 4.10's and 4.30's and 4.56's while road racers and autocrossers stick with the 3.27's, 3.55's and 3.73;s

Sort of -- simply put, the higher the "number" of the gears, the quicker it will accelerate, but it will lose some top end. (not much though, people with 4.10s can still usually hit 130-140mph.)

A stock 99-04 Mustang GT has 3.27 gears. If you put 2.73s in, it would accelerate somewhat slower, but would theoretically have a higher top speed. (Assuming it has enough horsepower.) If you put 4.10s in the same car it would accelerate like mad but lose a little on the top end.

They're great! I've had em for over a year and about 10,000 miles and no problems. They give me great acceleration, but only turn about 2500rpm at 80 in 5th gear so I still get good highway gas mileage.

4.30s or bust!
"Don't fear the gear" is the best way to put it.
Langod explained it the easiest way I think.

Here is a good "gear calculator" for you to play around with

The diameter (outside diameter) of your rear tire is also a huge consideration when selecting gear. The larger the tire the less affect a higher ratio will have. The smaller the tire the greater affect it will have.

its not a lot of gear...usually theres a debate on 4.10s or 4.30s...they are quite similiar..but i'd put my money on 4.30s anyday

I had 4.30's on my car before the turbo, they were the shit

Posted by: langod

You guys with 4.30s -- so... 1st gear is just a shifter decoration on your cars?
Dang, with 3.90s I find myself starting in 2nd gear most of the time when I'm just cruising around, I can't even imagine how short 4.30s must be....

I use 4th gear all the time in my car.
I love the torque!

HI RICK HERE

i do alot of gear installs at my shop here in nh most people dont go any steeper than 4.10s or 3.73s but i do more 4.10s than anything ,i think the 3.73s are the best street gears in the pre 05 cars ,with the s197 cars (05 and up ) i would go with the 4.10s ,this is for a mostly street car ,weve also been finding that some of the guys running 4.10s have a much better 60 foot time but are running the same top end time as the 3.73s ,im sure there is some driving style involved in that also .
