question about clutch on the GT

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So i just drove my fiance to work in the 98, the clutch seems to be engaging very high. Can that be adjusted or is the clutch just getting old?

Posted by: Ruzman

Funny you should say that...my Father took my Stang out for a few days and he said the same thing. "There is something wrong with your clutch...I was practically eating my knee before the clutch engaged" ...he said he's never had to release a clutch pedal so high up before it would engage. He said the clutch should engage after about 1 inch after you start releasing it. I said " I don't know Dad...I just had the clutch replaced last year...it's brand new. Maybe your 69 Mach1's clutch only needed 1 inch of release, but my 2000 GT doesn't." Now that I think about it though...I does seem like it doesn't engage until almost the very last second when you're about to take your foot off the clutch . Let me know what you find out because now I think it does seem like it's not right.

Pull the pedal up all the way with your foot til it clicks. We did that on mine and it self-adjusted

yeah, you'll need to adjust the stock quadrant..follow ed's directions...for once he is right

I do that EVERY morning and I still have to almost eat my knee before the clutch engages . Not to mention when I do pull up on the clutch pedal it doesn't make any clicking sound. The only time it ever did make a clicking sound when I pulled up on the clutch pedal was the day I bought the car and the service tech did it before he let me take the car off the lot.

so it sounds like your clutch cable is stretched beyond normal.....replace it with a new cable, aftermarket quadrant and firewall adjuster I recomend Maximum Motorsports for the total package

I would also recomend UPR's quadrant and firewall adjuster JUST NOT THEIR POS ADJUSTABLE CABLE

i read about that this morning on corral, i tried it and it feels like a new car now!

I think it's normal.

If you drive my car, the pedal engage high. It prob starts to grad half-way up and is fully engaged around 3/4 of the way up.

I've driven a few other GT's including another 2003GT and it was the same way. My car's been like this since new and everytime anyone drives it they claim it grabs high.

I tossed a thread on stangnet about it when i first got my car and a lot of other 4.6 guys chimed in claiming their grabbed high as well.

come on now... Ed spends all his time around poles or backdoors. He doesn't know about holes.

'cuz you are too cheap to buy a firewall adjuster.

Posted by: bullitt5177

Damn skippy!! But I think Angel actually sold one to me within this fustercluck of parts!!

Posted by: badass98svt

I don't see a firewall adjusterin those pics.

Ok here's the question....is this normal for our cars and if so do I REALLY need a firewall adjuster or is it safe to stay stock with the clutch releasing so high?
-Ruz

Posted by: TorchRedSVT

might wear the clutch out a little bit faster but its normal...my clutch caught right at the top for a few weeks after i put the clutch in and everything was fine.

I think it's normal.

Mine has grabbed high since day 1. I've had enough people tell me theirs also grabs high for my to be convinced it's normal for our cars.

Now if it used to grab low and now grabs high that's different, but my grab point has always been in the same exact spot so i'm not worried about it

Posted by: badass98svt

It's normal. But it's not very comfortable. A firewall adjuster is $40, and that's for a top notch one.
It's well worth it IMO.
I've had one on my last 2 stangs.

How hard is it to install one of these firewall adjusters? Also how long does it take...just curious if it's an easy do it yourself job.
-Ruz

Posted by: bullitt5177

No, the firewall adjuster isn't in that pic, but I think he did sell me one.

Posted by: badass98svt

Very easy to install. Go under the dash and disconnect the cable. Pull the cable through the firewall. Slide the cable throught the adjuster. Reattach the cable under the dash. The cable needs to haver that rubber gromet piece cut off it. The adjuster replaces that piece.

That sounds easy enough. I bought a brandy new 145 piece Craftsman tool set last year so that I have no excuses for not doing my own "layman" repairs and now I just need to build the confidence to do some of these repairs myself. Does NEBOC have a " firewall adjuster" day ...it seems there is enough members with the need to make it an official event. What does everyone think?
