Posted by: Mustang5L5 If you want 4.10's go for it, but my opinion is that 5.0's with their low end torque shouldn't go higher than 3.73's. Posted by: LXkid90 Quote:
Posted by: Calyp50LX 4.10s/All Motor all day baby Posted by: 81maroonhatch my opinion 3.73 for manual 4.11 for a AOD or performance C4 Posted by: bullitt5177 Agreed. 3.73s on a fox. 4.10s is just too much gear. Posted by: LXkid90 i bought 373s but thats what is in it right now(4banger rear end) but it seems like 410s wouldnt be to bad but w/e, ill take you guys word for it, you know more than me. Posted by: speedytang 70% Drag - 10% Highway - 20% Local Which T5 1st gear do you have? That makes all the difference. 2.97 1st - 4.30's Rock and Roll 3.27 1st - 4.10's I have driven all gear and transmission combos and these seem to be the best bang for the buck. If you use it alot on the street I would not recommend these ratios just because no way to get the speedometer accurate and that gets old on the street. Posted by: LXkid90 yeah how can i get the speedo accurate with 373's Posted by: bullitt5177 Speedo gear. You can buy them for like $30 from mostly any Mustang parts site. Posted by: speedytang if your internal speedo gear is yellow a 21 tooth will get your speedometer accurate with 3.73s. If the internal gear is another color your out of luck with anything lower than a 3.55. You will need to take apart the transmission and change the internal gear or buy a external cable adapter that you change internal gears in it to calibrate your speedometer. Posted by: LXkid90 whats up craig! yeah i bought the 373's, there sitting in my room waiting for me to go get the install kit and go get them done. then the rear end goes in, eibach drag launch springs, competition engineering 3ways, and a shot of no2 Posted by: Aussie XAXB Now that you say you will be using nitrous that may change recommendations completely. How is or will the engine be built? Are you going with a very long duration cam? Are you putting huge heads on it or just bigger than stock? Short duration torque cam? Steve Posted by: LXkid90 its all up in the air right now, i dont know to much about ford motors(still learning about them) because im a chevy guy at heart. i was thinking the trick flow twisted wedge heads, and i havent picked out a cam yet. Posted by: Aussie XAXB You need to decide how you want the engine to perform first. Whether it's a Ford or Chevy an engine will only perform optimally within a certain RPM range (powerband) and that range, along with tranny selection, will determine what would be the best gear for the rear end. If you are going to do mostly racing with the car then you probably will be building it for top end power. This will mean a high stall torque converter and steep gears to be able to get off the line. If you are going to be using larger diameter slicks then you will need to go with an even steeper gear. However this will be screaming on the highway. You will see 3,200 - 3,500 RPM at about 65 - 70 MPH. This gear could be 4.10:1 to about as much as 4.55:1 . The engine has to be built to handle regular service at high RPM, about 6,500 - 7,000. If you build the engine for snappy torque off the line and through the mid-range so that you race at a lower RPM, increasing engine life, then you will want a more conservative gear that could be as much as a mere 3.25:1 . This will also do much better on the highway. So before you can choose a rear gear you need to know what you are doing with the engine. However you achieve the build doesn't matter, you just need to know what RPM range the poweband will be in. Also vehicle weight factors in as well. Steve Posted by: PDUNLAP5.0 I, had a 91GT that ran 11s in the 1/4. I used 3.73s for many years and liked them alot. It's a good gear city, highway, and Drag. I went to a 4.10 before I sold it and I wished I hadn't made that change. I didn't like it driving around town. It seem like in 4th gear sometimes I was running to many rpms and would go to 5th and then wouldn't be running enough rpms and to change gears often but, with the 3.73s I could stay in 4th about the whole time. I guess it just depends on the speed limit where you are. It didn't seem to make much difference at the track neither. This is just my thoughts on the subject. If I had it to do again. I would'nt unless it was a automatic car. Posted by: 81maroonhatch 3.55 are great for light racing 373 are a good allaround gear but i would use a 3.90 but thats me Ford Mustang Archive Home | General Tech | 5.0 Mustang Tech | 4.6 Mustang Tech | 3.8 Mustang Tech | 2.3 Mustang Tech | Classic Mustang Tech | Appearance and Sound | Virtual Body Shop | Initiation | The Lounge | The Showroom | Site Suggestions | Mustang Talk | 2005 Ford Mustang | Ford Lightning | Racers Bench | For Sale | Wanted To Buy | Northeast | SouthEast | Central | MidWest | West Coast | NEBOC
