Anyway to determine shim size other than with Differential Clutch Gauge(Ford tool T80P-4946-A)? If not, where can one be purchased or rented? Thanks Jim Posted by: oldtimer found this on fordmuscle.com www.redpulsar.us/~coldfusion/tlok.html Posted by: oldtimer At my age I guess it's OK to talk to your self! Posted by: calypsoLX i can help you. I have done a few repackings in my life. I can tell u a way to get it as tight as possible. or if you are local I can show you how to do it in person. Or you can bring it to me and i can do it for you.
Posted by: calypsoLX Never mind you are in SC. Take the center section out take the ring gear off. Take out the s spring. rotate your pinion gears until they fall out off the carrier. Now you can pull the side gears with the clutch packs behind them. measure what you have for a shim in each side and write it down. Soak your new clutches in friction modifier. then stack them; clutch, steel steel, clutch steel steel onto the side gears. Place the side gears back in the carrier where they came out. try to eye up the pinion gears across from each other in the open part of the carrier. Then try rotateing the side gears to get them into the carrier. Take your axles and c clips. Put them inside the side gears and put your c clips in ( just like it would look in the car but take the housing out of the mental picture you are making) Pull the axles out against the side gears. Put your s spring in the center, used long nose vise grips to help compress the little bitch. With it in put your center pin back in the carrier. If the center pin goes in easy and doesnt touch the axle ends then you can put more shim in. I've had it so tight that I have to take a dead blow to the pin to get it in between the axles. That thing will rarely go one wheel peel on you. It will lay posi goin straight all the time, and might get you into trouble if you mash on the gas in the middle of a turn.
