burnin rubber with an auto

I bought an 06 mustang with an automatic transmission (don't laugh because I had my reasons). I drove her real easy for the first 3000 miles to make sure she was broke in properly but when floored her for the fist time it was like I understood Tim the Tool Man's grunt for the first time.

At I 6000 miles when I tried to light up my tires the car just took off not even a chirp. I was trying to show off a little with my work companions. I checked the traction control to make sure it was off and tried it again with no success. So I left with my tail between my legs and took back to the dealership.

The dealership told me that I had a bad cluth in the rear end and promply replaced the bad parts. I got the car back and took it for a test drive but again I could not burn rubber. When I took it back I was lectured on how the transmission and differential work and they say the car is now working properly. Sorry for the long story but my question is: Is the mechanic correct?? I can't believe I have 300+ hp and can't throw down some rubber!

It's because the 4.6L lacks low end torque. Nothing is wrong with your car. The 4.6L is known for making it's power all up top in the RPM range. Under 2500RPM it's pretty gutless. That's why you'll notice your car cruises with ease on the highway. From a dead stop with the engine at idle, there really isn't much power to break traction with an automatic.

Guys with 5-spds usually blip the throttle up a bit and dump the clutch to shock the tires loose. One of the advantages of a 5-spd.

If you want to spin the tires, rest one foot on the brake and mash the throttle. Once the rears start to spin up let off the brake and keep your RPM's up and it will bake em all day long.

Keep the RPM's high and the car will haul

BTW, i haven't driven an 05+ automatic yet. Do the 5-spd autos come with a sport shift manual mode??

Yup, power braking FTW, I used to power brake the piss out of my old ranger, that thing rocked. My 94 gt barely lit up the tires off the line, but if I staged it(holding the break pedal and slowly giving it throttle then taking off) just even a bit it would break the tires loose. With 4.10's it has no problem with breaking traction off the line.

My 94 was also an auto and I was impressed with the car at higher speeds, but from a dead stop it was pretty slow.

No to the SportShift manual mode for the autos

Damn, you would think they would since they use a version of that trans in the Lincoln LS.

Krypt,
You would be surprised at how little pressure you need on the brake pedal to smoke the tires with an automatic trans.I bought my wife an 06 GT with an automatic (mistake) but was surprised at the burn-outs you can do with it. I had a 340 Dodge Demon I bought new in 1972 with an automatic and could keep the tires smok'in in second gear by rolling backwards a little and nailing the throttle. I have not tried this method with the Ford yet but the day is coming.

Thanks for the replies, I am a little sad because I liked my car better when it was broken. I guess I let false advertising and memories of an old 68 stang that I used to own with a 302 engine cloud my judgement when came to buying this car. I mean come on I know everyone saw the commercial with the father and son doing burn outs in the parking lot and the father said you know this wrong and then says want to do it again.

On a happier note I sure do love the way this car looks and sounds. Maybe I just need to put a supercharger on it and even a chip. Thanks again
