I have stock wheels, and I was wondering if I should just take my pony to a tire place and have them put whatever tires they want on, or should I get certain ones? I am fairly ignorant about tires, but I know I need ones with adequate speed ratings. Also, can't different size tires fit on the same size rim? Thanks for any help. Posted by: Mustang5L5 I beleive you have 225/55/16's right? You can step up to a 245/50/16 if you wanted. It won't throw off the speed and will give you a little more rubber on the road. Tire brands matter, and you get what you pay for, however if you go to a tire store and say give me whatever, they will rape you. What kinda of tire do you want? High performance? All-season? Posted by: Noob55 Yea I have the 225s right now. What do each of those numbers mean? Is it the circumferance and width of the tire? I would like high performance tires, but doubt I have the money for them. I have about 400 for all 4 total, no more. Posted by: langod Here's asimple break down of the numbers: 225/55/16 225 is the width of the tire in millimeters. 55 is the "aspect ratio" of sidewall to tread width. A 55 means 55% of the tire size is sidewall -- meaning your side walls make up slightly more than half of the tire. Decreasing this to say, 45, would make the tread slightly more than half of the tire, meaning the sidewall is shorter amd the tread is wider. You can go crazy on both ends. Old 70s passenger cars had aspect ratios up around 75 or 80, while some exotics like Lamoborghinis have aspect ratios of 30 -- kind of like wrapping a rubber band around the rim. 16 is simply the size of the "hole" in the tire -- meaning it will fit in a 16" rim. I would highly recommend going here and reading, reading, reading about tires to educate yourself. Remember, your car's tires are THE ONLY parts of your car touching the road, keeping you in control and making sure the shiny side stays up! Posted by: Mustang5L5 first number is the width in millimeters the second number is the aspect ratio of the sidewall. In other words it's a percentage of the width so a 55 sidewall means it's 55% of 225...or about 124 mm tall. Last number is rim diameter. If you want a cheap performance tire, look into Kumho's..specifically the 712's or the SPT's or the ASX and AST if you need all-season for snow. They are less than $100 each http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....odel=ECSTA+SPT http://www.tirerack.com/tires/kumho/kumho.jsp Not many makers make cheap tires in 16" Posted by: Noob55 Thanks for all the help, those links are loaded. I will be spending a while reading them.
