Can check engine light be turned off with the old disconnect the battery trick?

Yep. Not to say it's real good for the ECU, but in a pinch, pull the negative cable for 15 minutes. Advance/AutoZone can clear it for you for free safely.

However if any sensors or anything is bad the light will come right back after a few mins of driving

It depends on which sensor. Some will trip the light within minutes, others will take forever to come back up. Mine just popped up after 250 miles of driving. I was positive I had figured it out, but evidently not.

Plus if its an obdII car, you won't be able to pass inspection by simply clearing the memory bc the odb systems test will not be fully complete after clearing any errors. Its a much harder system to cheap compared to obdI.

I'm not sure on this for Mustangs, but on some cars, if the condition that threw the CEL has been fixed, you can shut off and start the car 6 or 7 times to clear the code from the computer. I guess OBD only retains the codes for 6-8 "cycles" of driving?
But if the error condition still exists, the CEL will come back on after a little while.

thanks for all the input. detailed the car and had a miss afterwards. Son-in-law ckecked and came up with code #7 missfire. Car has the original coils and wires so new new MSD kit is on the way. Did aslo get new tires and wheels 3 weeks ago 17x8 bullit. Car looks real good now. Also BBK cold air kit coming. Thanks again for all the help.
