The battery is fine and I adjusted the timing so now it will stay started but I have to keep giving it gas, and its bellowing out white smoke out of the headers. could it be that the valves are not set right?

White smoke is usually an indication of coolant burning in the cylinders such as from a leaking head. Blue smoke would be oil.

What year is your engine? In the 1980's and up 302's the row of headbolts along the edge on the exhaust side are drilled into the cooling jackets. Did you use sealant on the bolts?

Check to see if you are getting air bubbles in your coolant and if the coolant level is dropping. What head gaskets did you use? Did you use a torque wrench when re-assembling?

The car is a 1991 and I did torque the bolts but did not use a jacket sealant on the headbolts so more than likely thats my prob, and as far as the coolant level it did drop several inches, and I used the gasket that came with my overhaul kit figured it would be good as any? First time ever rebuilding an engine.

Thanx for the help
