Transmisson "whine"?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a 2000 3.8L Coupe that the tranny "whines" in 1st and 2nd gear only at a steady rpm of 2500. It doesn't "whine" until I hit that rpm. The other 2000 3.8L I have doesn't do it.

The car has 72k on the odo if that helps.

Normal or do I need to take it apart?

Thanks in advance!

1st thing to do is check fluid level (or gear oil level)

When fluid levels are low, a whine is the first indication.

If fluid is where it is supposed to be, what is the condition of it (color, any dirt/metal shavings in it)

if its a manual, has the clutch been done ? if so, was the pilot bushing replaced ? (I had an F-body transam, whiny trans. went nuts trying to solve the prob.. Pilot bushing was bad.)

Yes the clutch has been redone before I bought it.

I didn't even think of that before

Check and change fluid.

T-5's tend to whine when the bearings get starved of fluid. A quick refill may fix the situation.

Usually whining in a few gears only is due to something moving out of spec.

Also, do you have a shifter? Sometimes aftermarket shifters whine.

Hard to really diagnose without seeing/hearing firsthand

mone whines because of the short shifter, but if you dont have one i would have it checked out. Fluid def needs to be checked.

Just an update.

I changed the tranny fluid and most of the whine is gone. Thanks for all of the help!

Another update, the whine is back and not only in 1st and 2nd, now it is in 3rd gear also.

It is going to a Summit Shop tomorrow for a free evaluation.

I will update what they find, if anything.
