What signals engine RPM in the engine bay?

What tells the car engine RPM? Where does the tach get it's signal from?

I have a problem with my tach needle "sticking" for the first few minutes on startup when it's cold out (under 32 degrees). It usually fixes itself after a couple mins of driving. WOn't happen in warmer weather.

I also noticed that a couple times when i rinsed down my engine, the needle would do the same for a few mins if it was warm out. The only times it has done it when warm has been when i wet down the engine bay while cleaning the engine (i don't do it too often anyway)

So what could be affected by temp or water to cause the needle to "stick"

This would come from the crankshaft position sensor. The computer translates this info to a tach reading.

I got the same response from other forums.

Do you know where on the 4.6L It's located?

Sorry. About the only thing I know is where the ignition coil covers are on the 32 valve 4.6 . I am an old school guy.

Time to go to the library and look at a Mitchell's manual or some other reputable manual. Everything you need to work on your car is there.

Thought I responded to this along time ago ......Did you find it?

Nope, i gave up. I really can't find it. Is it visable from only underneath as i was waiting til the next time i changed my oil to poke around under there.

Plus is warm now and it's not an issue, but when it gets cold again i'll prob be at it again
