A bit of an embarrassment for me. Three rounds (3 times on the track). Four hard corners, two slalom runs, no straights. Twice around the course is one round. So while horsepower helps, it's not as important as smooth driving. The car handled pretty well with just a little understeer. But it wasn't the problem, I was the problem. I've been waiting to drive it hard for so long that I just could not keep out of the accelerator. Consequently, 1st. run I was "off-course" twice - no time. 2nd. run I was motoring, and believe I would have had a good time - except I was having so damn much fun - I tried to make 3 laps instead of the proscribed 2 laps - red flag & no time. By the 3rd round, I was so embarrassed about the 1st two that I took it pretty easy and turned in a 63.55 time. Nothing to brag about but faster than over half the 100 plus cars in the competition. My son turned in a 64.35, less than a second from my time in a car with 150 horsepower less, stock suspension and street tires. Ya think he didn't rub it in? But I'm proud of him. He was driving smooth unlike his old man. The next event will have some long straights on it so I should be able to take advantage of the better acceleration of the GT. (and maybe I've re-learned the lesson of smooth vs hard.) Plus, I should have the suspension right where I want by then - so no excuses.) OldFart Posted by: Aussie XAXB Next time you won't be as giddy and should do better. Maybe you can get in some practice before the next event and get some of the "fun" worked out before the race? Sounds like when you get down to business that you will do quite well. Doing better than 50% of the other cars while not taking it to the track is pretty good. Remember Julius Borrow's book "Swing Easy, Hit Hard" and how he used a smooth and easy swing, accurately timed and precise on the ball to hit it further? My god I am dating myself. Anyways, as you get more acquainted with the car and feel more like "wearing" it instead of sitting in it you will be able to feel your way around the track. That is when you will be dangerous to the other drivers. Steve Posted by: Donna Sounds like you had a fun time anyway. Posted by: OldFart Well I was almost a winner this past Saturday. The car is really starting to come together with the recent changes I've made. Between the Ground Control Koni coil-over set-up, the flow-matched injectors and the addition of a Plasma Booster on the ignition - it's running just great! I was able to out accelerate a Corvette Z06 on the straights (and dont' you know that pissed him off since I'm running a little 281 in a 3,600 lbs car vs his big cube wrapped in fiberglass.) He was smoking his tires out of the corners leading into the straights, while my new suspension was getting everything to the ground and I was just disappearing to the next corner. I would have won my class but for my own mistake (sounds familar doesn't it). I came into the last corner before the finish way, way too hot - and didn't make the corner. Even so, I was far enough ahead that I still came in 3rd after spending some few seconds getting it back on-track and across the line. The only excuse I have is that the car is winding up like a chain saw on nitro-methane and I'm still not used to it yet. So I sometimes find myself going a bit faster than I intended when I try to push a hole through the floor board. (But I wouldn't have it any other way.) With all the speed I'm making, I was just sure I was going to discover that I needed bigger, better brakes. But the brakes were fine and never let me down. They were exceeding the limit of the tires and that's good enough for right now. I may change my mind about this if I run on race tires that offer better traction, but for now they are working just great with no changes. It's not broke so I'm not going to fix it. But all in all, had a wonderful time and can't wait until the next race. I think it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. OldFart Posted by: nomad_dave Quote:
which is a good thing out there. Once you get your setup all dialed in, you'll have to give us some details on it. Also, some pictures of what type of racing you are doing and your car would be nice too.Cheers.
