3.8 mod list and dynos!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: kissajew86

I was curious of who had a 3.8, your mods, what your fav mod is, and how much HP you dyno'ed if you have done it.

here are mine
2002 3.8 mustang

207/215 cam
1.8 Harland Sharp Roller rockers
home polished upper and lower
Densecharger CAI
25% UDP
true dual borla exaust
steeda short shifter
fordchip mail order tune
75 shot of NX express(when i feel like it)
3.73 gears and limited slip differential

my last dyno was before teh mail order tune and the underdrive pullies. the cam with no tune really messed up my numbers. I made 181 rwhp and 210 lbs tq. i belive if i dynoed tosay i would make slightly over 200 rwhp

my fav mod was a toss up between the 3.73 gears and the 1.8 hartland sharp RR. I think the glory of the cam was stolen by the Hartland sharp RR that i had installed 3 months before the cam

Posted by: ExBamaGal

Got a 3.8 here. Not many performance mods though Only Eibach Pro-kit springs and a MAC CAI. Never dyno'd...guess there'd be no point since I'm pretty much stock lol

Posted by: 97v6Silver

you forgot your radio-active rimz...

no dyno but i run 15.1 at 90 (havent been since gears)

mods:
ud pullies
computer retuned

cai
p&p upper lower tb
3:73's tlok
tokiko shocks
2" drop
mac short throw
shortend throttle cable (even with break pedal)

few apperance & stereo things but ehh...

favorite mod was prolly the shifter it feals so much betta

for the top post...did you get over 200whp w/o Nitrous? Impressive for a V6.

Posted by: mysteed

my mods are in my sig.....well, most of the major ones anyways....

Posted by: drmac

I would like to do the cam, heads, and intake, but can't afford it all at one time. Would a cam only be worth it? Should I wait and do the three together or can I do them separately?

Anybody have numbers for cam, heads, or intake (only) on a 99+ 3.8L

Posted by: revmaynard02

check my sig. for mods. I haven't dyno'd yet, but I will be shortly to get numbers and a/f ratio's before I do my heads, cam, and all the other stuff waiting to go in.

Bone Stock now. Grinding on a set of heads~~ Wont be long~

i hit 181 without a tune and without ud pullies. UD pullies have been proven in the past to add 7 hp and a chip without the cam correction, just advancing the timing, has dynoed with some people 8 hp. that should put me close to the 200 hp mark but if i ever get the money to go dyno it again i will get sure proof.

with nitrous i should be close to 270 hp with a 75 shot of course. I may stick a 100 shot in there for an ennis run....

hey, I have a v6 and wanted to put a dual exaust on my mustang. i was wondering if u guys knew if i could just install a v6 dual adapter kit and put on any regualar 4.6 liter GT exaust catback system....say with a SLP loudmouth II exaust kit? with that work or is there more to it?

Guess I can update my mods...finally got Flowmaster 40 series dual exhaust. Not much but it's more than stock

Posted by: kissajew86

I moved all the UD pully discussion to a new thread

Posted by: 1969Vette

Current mods:

Performance -
GT true dual takeoff exhaust w/ H pipe

Future mods:

Performance - definate
Densecharger full length intake
42% UD Pulleys
1.8 Roller Rockers
small stuff like wires/plugs

- maybe
Superchip
trac-lok w/ gears (im not too big on the gears, but maybe)

Style - definate
Saleen front bumper (got into small, accident, need a new one anyway)
Mach-1 grill delete (gets rid of cheap plastic-looking honeycomb grill)
Flaming pony - (on Competition Orange, should look really good)
Emblems (3.9L where the dealer is (drivers side) and V6 where ford is)

- most likely
Sequential taillights
Saleen side scoops (gets rid of cheap plastic v6 inside of scoops, goes with bumper)
Rims, Saleen-type rims or the new deep dish bullit's (black w/ chrome) but not 'til my stocks get beat up

- doubtful, but will if i feel the need to do something
Hood, possibly black widow (gets rid of small last small cheap plastic peice)
Spoiler/wing (Cobra 'R', but Im worried about the new holes and repainting)
then maybe side skirts (that dont stick out alot), i like stock rear bumper.

the bumper, grill delete, flaming pony, emblems, sequentials, intake, and ud pulleys should be on by May-june. 1.8RRs by jun-aug.

My favorite/only mod? GT Takeoffs, best word to describe it is "smooth".

Its my only mod, because ive been paying the car off early, now i am like 2yrs ahead on a 5yr loan, so im going to start modding soon for this summer.

Posted by: 1969Vette

update....

Saleen front bumper (ordered)
demolet.com's 3d full length intake (ordered)
sequential taillights (ordered)

Anybody have numbers for cam, heads, or intake (only) on a 99+ 3.8L
99+ w/old 207 cam and a tune, a couple guys got 210-215 RWHP
with boltons and true dual exhaust...

but that cam is old news, I designed that in 2000 I think when I was
helping RPM-Mustangs get a start, he has other grinds now but that one is
still popular for the cheap springs and pushrods it uses... I'd strongly
recommend a newer grind and you're in luck, I will spec you out one and
for free, plus tell you what to buy and where (below retail) if you email me.

rgrcfm1@yahoo.com

You can port your own heads and intakes if you have basic skills,
and the cam will be a huge contributor for a split port streeter!
One fellow got 236 RWHP with the old 207 cam and lots of porting,
and a setup I just finished last summer got 243 RWHP with stock
valve heads with an auto trans, coulda been around 260 RW on
a 5 speed but that is just a guess. He has a much larger cam in
it, but has heavily ported intakes to match, and is getting a blower
later on down the road. IMO the cam is too big for NA but worked
pretty well, it uses modern lobes with aggressive ramps, from
Comp Cams, my #1 favorite grinder by far!

I do not port anymore for others, get that from RPM or SSM,
both are good, or DIY-it, it is not that hard.

PS: cam only is a good mod, if you get the tune too,
but if you have the skills I'd port the heads and/or intakes
while they are off there. Just minor head porting pays off,
do most of the work on the exhaust ports, and a cleanup
on the intake ports, and port the intakes, making them as
smooth as possible and concentrate on enlarging the short
runners more (to the gasket lines) all the way thru.

Bigger TB's are a waste unless unless you do the post removal
on 99^ intakes, that is the posts in the crossover tube. They
keep the crossover flow down to approximately what the stock
TB flows, and anything bigger in a TB is a waste. Post removal
allows ~200 CFM more in the crossover, then a big TB can
actually help (if your engine can use the extra air that is!)

Posted by: RGR

Big TB's are usually for strokers...

Posted by: 1969Vette

sequential tailights received and installed today. the taillights are a bitch to uninstall, the actual harnesses are simple, but the overall look is good and worth it if you dont mind pain and scraped knuckles.

so my *2* mods are now...

Performance
GT Takeoffs with H pipe

Styling
Sequential Taillights

Posted by: RGR

For $1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1995 V6, bone stock internal engine...
External performance mods are as follows:

Pacesetter crossover, true duals, 2.25"
MAC stainless muffs
3.73's, T-Lok, 7.5" rear
MAC CAI

The prior owner (my friend, PilotMulvs) ran a mid 15 in this setup,
it's mostly cuz he is a great driver at the track! The reason I'm
getting this for a great price is that I've known Pilot since 1998
and he is buds with my son also, who is now 17 and needs a car
Plus the car needs Head Gaskets, and Pilot wants a newer COBRA.

Current complete mods list, see attachment:

PS: We are planning a big stroker for this car as the replacement engine,
bigger than anyone has done yet, and I am completely capable, I have
been doing this V6 thingy longer than anyone in the USA, I started when
Morana was the only game in V6 Mustangs, and was running carbs
(but going 12's in a V6!!!)

See "SIX OFFENDER" in February's MM&FF, I did the engine combo's for
José Cardenas, they got the article a bit wrong on the details, I did all
the engine speccing, porting, and special intakes. Even the 4.3 stroker.

Yeah Baby!

I want to be the first one to go over 300 RWHP NA and
hope to do it with the single port. I don't think anyone
has hit 300 RWHP NA with any Ford V6 yet...

Posted by: RGR

We've started tearing into the motor, hope the block and pistons are
OK, I will be shooting for top numbers on an NA stock shortblock!

Here is the basic engine mods list:

-BIG cam, not settled on specs yet
-Heavily milled BV heads, we want ~10:1 or a bit more.
-Race Ported/Welded (or epoxy, epoxy is your friend!) lower intake, it
will have straightened runners with no lumps from bolt bosses or the like.
-Custom Upper Intake, not decided yet, but I have done lot of these.
-Custom Tune, might get a tuner to come in and dyno tune it...

This setup should cause lots of

a good place for you to explore what they have done with a v6 mustang would ne v6power.net. There are quite a few single ports over 300 rwhp and some over 400 rwhp if i am not mistaken

after they are ported out well they flow pretty decent....

the single port has the advantage to a point becasue of the good flowing heads, however the intake eventually catches up with it from what i understand.

Posted by: RGR

The key word here is NA and no one has posted a dyno graph
(or even a claim) of 300 RWHP NA. They are all SC'ed or Turbo.
I check out the V6Power dyno list. It is the most extensive dyno
list, but I was wondering if you guys over here knew of one.

I'm a founding member of V6P and I've done lots of single port work,
not asking for help just info. I've done EFI V6 Mustang porting longer
than anyone in the USA actually...

The heads do flow pretty well, I've gotten ~230 CFM pretty easily with
cheap big valves, I'm really gonna push a set this year. Maybe even big
valve seats, so I can get bigger valves in there than the stock seats allow.

Posted by: Xerxeese

Please do not do that again. There was no need. If you have something you would like to say in a derogatory manner to someone , please do it via personal message. This post is supposed to be about mod lists and dyno. Lets keep it that way.

Since 1997!
I think you grossly misunderstood what I was saying, Xerxeese so I added
some clarity above. I don't get mad and slam people on message boards.
Now to be back on topic, I was wondering if anyone knew of an NA V6
that exceeded 300 RWHP NA and I may have found one, SSM's green
notch back hit 287 RWHP and now Tom Y of SSM has added LT headers
and exhaust improvements, and says it feels like it has possibly hit that,
and it probably will if the changes are tuned for. That's on a 4.3 SPI.

Posted by: kissajew86

rgr, xerxeese was not refering to you, there were quite a few ugly remarks we deleted that were made by 1969Vette.

Posted by: 1969Vette

... i didnt think that post went through. it was just about you being first at doing this and i thought you said it much more than you did... although you have said it a few times on this same page. I wasnt really trying to be mean or anything, just got tired of reading the same thing in so many posts... sorry.

my butt dyno says my car has gained power over last week when I installed my cold air intake. I guess the computer is still adjusting. I also hear it sucking in air at startup now. still no whistling though.

Posted by: RGR

I was just trying to establish a background, didn't mean to
overdo it. I'll just try and help as much as possible and I
know I can still learn from most anyone, I'm open to new
(seemingly) freaky ideas, a closed mind gathers no moss
or something like that, so I try and stay open.

We're cool 69Vette Dude,

and Thanks X and Kissajew, for having my back

Posted by: 1969Vette

yea, we're cool... if you're going for RWHP... you're should get a lightened flywheel, aluminum or even carbon fiber driveshaft... those may be cheaper than certain engine mods and help you get to that magic number instead of just thinking about the motor alone.

the lightened flywheel can supposedly give around 20 RWHP... and the driveshaft could give 5-10RWHP+, not to mention it would be more easily revving and putting less strain on the engine.

Just something to think about, although im sure you have already.

These are good mods, helps the engine rev quicker, the light flywheel is not
always a good strip mod, cuz if you launch at high RPM you lose that initial
thrust of using the built-up inertia to throw the car forward, but on the
other hand, after launch you recover RPM's quicker, so it's kind of a trade.
Most guys just use the stock flywheel, it is a decent compromise for the
street and strip. Some dedicated drag racers use a heavier flywheel, but
most road racers find the lightweight versions best. Your choice here!

The driveshaft is a good mod for any setup. It is like reducing un-sprung
weight in your suspension as it relates to flywheels and driveline. Reducing
mass after the constantly rotating engine is good for everyone.

But it never hurts to remind me!

so youre building a drag car? i was just saying that to help you get to your performance goals on the dyno.

Posted by: RGR

Yes! This is goinf to be a workhorse V6.

The heads come off today. If everything is OK, we'll commence
with the "Ultimate Stock Shortblock" V6 build. At least it will be my
interpretation of that...

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to the mustang thing. I have a v6 powered '99 and was wondering what can I have done to my mustang to give v8's a hard time. Mine is an automatic and I know I should get to work on it. It sluggish from the start. I also noticed the overdrive button doesn't work, I checked all the fuses and they are fine, I just don't know what else to check. I bought the vehicle used, I like it now ai want to make it look good and run great!
Can you help with which direction I can go and where to find parts and someone to do the work.
Gus

please discuss gusfly's post here : http://www.muscle-mustangs.com/forum...ead.php?t=7780

Please do not have discussions in this post, i would prefer to keep this dyno charts/mod list. i will clean up in a couple of days.
