I just changed my oil for the first time in my 06 and used the reccomended viscosity but was curios as to whether a heavier oil could be used in the summer months ( prefferably 5w30 or 10w30 fully synthetic ). Thanks Steve
Posted by: Aussie XAXB Stick to what the manufacturer recommends. The bearing clearances and hydraulic lifters set the viscosity requirements. Bearing clearances are a lot tighter than they were 25 years ago when cars typically ran on 10W-40. Now most cars use 5W-30 and some even a 25 weight oil. Steve Posted by: mcqueen 25 years ago we ran 10-30, 10-40 and can remember 20w50 in the summer, 5w was unheard of. Thanks for the reply. Posted by: Aussie XAXB Quote:
As I get more miles on an engine I will move up in viscosity. "High mileage" oil is a nice marketing term. The thing about high miles is bearing wear and enlarged clearances so I just bump up from 30W to 40W and not worry about paying extra for a "formulated" oil.
