My frist performance mod

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just installed the C&L CAI today, and used the low octane tune on the Diablosport Predator.
In case you're wondering, I went with the low octane tune because I couldn't wait until I had re-filled the tank with premium to install it.
I plan on doing a couple of 91 octane fillups, and then going ahead with the high octane tune.
I can already feel a difference, notably that my RPM's are about 300 lower at city speed.
Next on this list is a custom plenum cover.

There's a low-octane tune on the 05+ predator? Lucky dog, you.....

Posted by: badass98svt

don't you need a proper tune after installing the C&L. i keep reading that the 05+ needs a tune after nearly every engine mod.especially a MAFS

Pretty sure the C&L intake tune on the Diablo website is 91 or 93 octane only. You better do your homework on that. You need the separate tune for the C&L. I'm suprised your check engine light didnt come on.

Since you have made this mod you can answer a couple questions I have...

Now that the CAI is in place, where is that thing sucking "cool" air from with the hood closed?

Secondly, why would your RPM's be any slower while cruising at city speeds? Your engine needs to turn at so many RPM along with the trans, driveshaft, rear axle, and along with wheel size to maintain a given speed, regardless of HP or torque, while they are in effect "one unit" (all engaged). Dropping in even 150 HP (that being the only change) is not going to change your RPM while cruising at 35 MPH. What do you attribute the RPM change to?

I've heard nothing but good results with the Diablo tunes.

This was a package purchase, the CAI and tuner came together, with preloaded tunes.
The book says that the predator has a perfomance tune, and a 87 octane tune.
The predator itself uses the verbage "high octane tune", and "low octane tune".

As far as the rpm thing, it is possible I am mistaken, and was just looking for a visible sign of a difference.

I find the stock Diablo tunes to be pretty weak. The better 05 tuners are SCT dealers who tune 05s every day. The air comes from underneath the car in front of the wheel well. There's plenty of it.

Okay

wondering the same thing, where do you get your air from ?

Perhaps I need to word my question better. Where is the openning between the outside and inside of the engine compartment that the flow of cool air is coming from? What path does the outside air take to get from outside to the air filter?

On our 2002 Mercury Villager the snorkle for the air cleaner has its open end FACING the backside of the headlight. Evidently the engineer in charge of designing this aspect of the vehicle was happy just to have an open end for the snorkle ANYWHERE.

The thumbnails don't show up for you?

Why does the air that is rushing past under the car go up into the engine compartment where the filter is at? Is there a scoop or cowl that gets added down there to direct the air upward? I don't know how extensive these kits are.

Jeeze Aussie, you've got a twisted sense of humor. Stop baiting the new guys. They can't help it if they haven't been working or cars most of their life.

To answer the question: Some cold air intakes actually have a piece of flexible tubing that connects the filter box to a fitting in, or under the front valence. In the case of the 05/06 model, (as previously noted by others) and every CAI I've looked at, the air comes from under the front valence, between the valence and the drivers side wheel well and into the air box or filter. If you stand on the drivers side and try to look at the inside of the drivers headlight, you will see the air path.

If you are concerned about enough air getting to the filter - stick your hand out the window at anything over 25 mph and feel the air squeezing between your fingers, even if you hold your fingers tight. Air under pressure will always follow the path of least resistance, but we are talking about a very large amount of air flow here. A substantial amount of air will follow even a path of high resistance.

Don't worry, be happy. The filter of your CAI is getting all the air it can handle.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing so hard when I read that. I'm just trying to get them to think a little more than what is stated in the advertising. You nailed me.

Thank you for your answer. If the air is coming through the valance and there's an openning to where the filter is mounted from there then that sounds pretty effective. I haven't really looked through a '05-'06 Mustang yet to know how congested it is in this area.

You might want to think about a shift kit like Steeda Tri Axe before long. Once you go to the Predator tune you are going to want one. The combo of a cai and DiabloSport Predator that car is really gonna run and you don't want to be missing 3rd gear. Steeda's is a really easy 1/2 hr mod but worth every cent.

Nice mod.

HI This is also Humboldt, Ia Stang, I did a C&L MAI install and Predator tune from C&L, 91 octane. It seems to run well but it makes this squealing noise every minute or so and lasts about 1-2 seconds, like a belt squeal. Seems to run OK, just this funny noise. Any suggestions.
