gears and top speed...?

if I have 2.73 gears stock and go to 3.73s

2.73/3.73=~73.2%

would my top speed then go from 120 down to 87.8mph?

~73.2*120=~87.8

I figure it would until you got a programmer, but how much would a programmer raise it? to 100mph? and wouldn't you then be going past red-line?

I do drive some on highway, plus I dont want to be cruiseing around at 2500RPMs+. I know a friend put gears in his z28 and could only do 80-90mph, which I thought was really stupid when he should have been able to do 130-150. I was just wondering how much the programmer could safely reraise your top speed.

edit* I don't do 120, but I don't want to be at 4000RPM+ while cruiseing on the highway at 65-80mph

i have 3.73 and you are not at 4000+rpm at 80 mph

you can correct the spedometer cheeper by getting a spedohealer, which is below. it is much cheeper than a chip

i didnt see much of a mpg drop, mabey 1-2 mpg.
i wouldnt worry much about wear and tear, if anything the reduced lugging of the engine will balance out the slightly higher rpm

The V6 is speed limited to 117MPH due to the tires.

Even if you add the gears, your top MPH will still be 117MPH. The limited works off the speedo. As long as you get it corrected, you will still be stuck at 117MPH, not like you need to go any faster though

I dont understand... wouldn't you have to raise all of the shift points? and then be over the redline when you get to 100+. Im also thinking automatic trans... so only 4 gears, not 5.

so are you saying a v6 could go 140-150 without the governor? and with the gears you could still go 117?

what RPM is our v6s at stock when we do 117? If its fairly low then I could see that it can be raised, but right now im confussed.
