Hey, I was wondering if anybody knows if those plastic "blackout" covers for your headlight are illegal? I was planning on getting them, I have a black stang, but I didnt know where to find them or if they were legal. Please let me know. Thanks.

Joe

From what I've always heard they are okay to have during the day but you have to take them off at night. You may want to check the laws in your state to be sure.

I haven't had any problems with mine. Be sure to get an extra set of driving lamps installed though because they do make driving at night a little hard!

Yes they are illegal. Your turn signals are covered over that's why.

What year is your car? If it's a 99+ you could always run the factory "blacked out" lights.

You can find GTS blackouts at any performance shop, but like Mustang5L5 stated they are illegal. I've only drivin my car a few times during the night only to get back from a car show so I haven't really had the chance to get pulled over. Like Tony said, you could always get the smoked headlights

I had the GTO GTS blackouts on my black '95 and got i think 3 tickets for them. (like $45 ea) 1 specifically for them at night, because it noticeably dims them. and 2 from getting pulled over for other reasons. they looked good though, so I kept them on the back at all times and just took the front ones off at night.

you can notice the front ones on at night, cops will know. the back ones, you cant really tell too much because its a red going to alittle darker red instead of white/yellow to gray/darkyellowishbrown on the fronts.

They shouldn't pull you over during the day. As long as its pretty light out, not rainny/snowing.

another reason to take the off at night is that they may cause your bulbs to burn out quicker because it traps more heat. My lights started flickering on and off when turned on... I had to get a new switch and wiring. I don't know if this was because of the blackouts or the switch just happened to burn out, but just be aware of what could possibly happen if you keep the fronts on while your lights should be on. (tickets and maybe light/elctrical problems) although im not sure they did cause the electrical problems

also... the back on the '95 were pretty much permanent, they had velcro, but really hard plastic velcro that wouldve probably ripped the sticky part off as well. the front took about 20 seconds to take off or put on, they just clip on around the headlights; extremely easy. and be careful because they will get scratched if you put them in the wrong places.

the only problem that i have had was driving at night ive had a cop come up to me and talk to me about mustangs and all he said nothing about them being on at night he liked them also have been pulled over at night and havnt gotten a ticket for them

yea they are extremely easy to take on and off... and thats why ive had 2 pair stolen. so now i have to remove them when i go to school or anywhere thats questionable. the newest pair i got wont come off unless the hoods open, so thats a little better, but alls i have are hood pins and no latch, so i guess it would just take a thief a few seconds longer. haha

Just don't!

Unless you get a very mild tint type of black-outs (which kind of defeats the purpose), other drivers cannot see you at night. These covers were all my son wanted for his Mustang for X-Mas so I got him a set of GTO Brand covers.

After having two separate near accidents, we removed them. The first time someone didn't see him at night and pulled out in front of him. The second time he was nearly rear-ended because the other driver couldn't see his brake lights. Additionally, he complained that he couldn't see as well due to the headlights being considerably dimmer because of the black-outs. All of this ocurred within three days of installing the black-outs.

Avoid these like the plaque. They are only good for "off-road" show purposes not daily driver. Had my son actually had an accident in either instance, I'm quite sure he would have been found at fault due to the black-outs.

Except the turn signals and front reflectors are covered making them technically illegal.

Any headlight or taillight mod is illegal Tinting your taillights can also make you partially responsible if you get rear-ended if the person is smart enough to bitch to the cop that he couldn't see your brake-lights. I was riding shot gun in a work truck when we rear ended a civic with tinted tails. I told the cops we couldn't see his brake lights due to the tint and he got an equipment voilation and the accident was ruled 50/50.

They look good and all, but just don't be ignorant to the fact that there may be consequences for "looking good"

I've had the gts headlight covers for along time. I've had no problems running them during the day but, have been pulled over at night but, I don't use them anymore at night because even with the headlights on bright on a dark road their just to hard for me to see. Maybe I'm just getting old.
