Which Air Intake System Rules?

Does anyone have an 03-04 cobra with either a C&L air intake or a BBK air intake? I am going to get one of these for my ride. Not sure if the "air filter inside the fender" method that BBK uses is any better technology than the conventional style that C&L uses Any feedback would help.

I don't have a Mustang Cobra, but if I were you, I'd go with the polished BBK Cold Air Intake. Not only does it bring cooler air in from the fender, but it has that nice BBK shine!

That is what I had in mind too, but I keep thinking I may be missing out on extra HP from the bigger 95 MAF that the C&L comes with.

BBK for a Cobra can produce 10-14 more HP while the C&L produces 17-30 more HP.

I'd say if your in it soely for performance needs, go with the C&L intake. If you want a show quality finish while adding a few extra ponies, I'd say go BBK.

a rule of thumb:
metal intake heat up, decreasing the "cold" air effect. this has been proven with Temp. tests.
i'd say go with C&L, Densecharger, K&N fipk, JLT etc.

What about Roush's CAI???

JLT

stay away from metal and go with a plastic setup

JLT RAI or CAI, It's plastic so there is hardly any heatsoak...I got the RAI because I didn't want to go thru a large rain puddle and get water into my intake.

When performance gains are listed it is in direct proportion to the other modifications to the engine (stock, hotter cam, better heads, etc.) so just because they list 17-30 HP increase it doesn't mean you could hope to get a 30 HP increase on a stock engine. Improvements in performance will be dictated by the engine performance level prior to the CAI.

Also, look more to torque increases rather than HP increase. HP is a theorietical "calculation" whereas torque is an actual measured twisting force put out by the engine. So what if you have 500 HP but only 180 ft. lbs. of torque (figures intentionally exaggerated for illustration purposes).

You can't believe manufacturer claims. This can't be repeated enough for people to "get it" apparently. Why do manufacturers make exaggerated claims? Why, so they can sell their products of course!

Case in point: On the K&N website, the FIPK for the 99-04 Mustang GT has an associated dyno sheet (on a 1999 GT) that shows a 10.07 hp increase. Guess what? It's bullshit. Know how much I got with mine? 3 hp. Dyno'd. Yep -- that's it. Now I'm sure some people will get more/less than that, but remember -- K&N is trying to sell products, and they can make sure that whatever car they test it with is PERFECT so that they get the biggest HP increase. Overall however, you can't trust manufacturer claims for performance increase.

Note: I'm not upset with K&N's claims at all -- I like my FIPK and think it works well, but that's because I knew I wasn't going to get 10hp out of it in the first place.
