battery being drained

I just bought a 1989 LX 5.0 about a month ago that had a sub in it, but the person I bought it from took out their amp. So I went and got an amp and put it in. Now the battery is getting drained somehow. I'll start the car up fine and then go drive around some and park somewhere and then have it give me trouble when I go to start it again, like the battery is starting to go and last week the battery didn't even have enough juice to start the car so I had to charge the battery first. I didn't get a lot of time to drive the car before I put the amp in, but when I did drive it before I didn't get any trouble like this. I hooked up all of the wires to the amp correctly. I found a receipt for the battery that was dated in 2003 and I believe the battery is a 5 year one. I did notice that the cable connected to the negative terminal doese have a small wire that comes off of it and is grounded. This small wire has a portion of it that has electrician tape (I think) around it becaues it was bare. My dad took offf that tape and put on new tape and I just looked at that area and it seems like the wire melted through the tape some, so now you can see the wire a bit. Would this cause a problem? The wire also seems to have been cut and then has a connector connecting the two halves. If it matters, the person I bought the car from stores it in the winter and hadn't registered it again yet when I bought it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Still doesn't seem to be fixed though. I can start the car fine ussually when it's been sitting for a whil/e and then I can go drive around for a bit and park. Then if I try to start it like 10 minutes later, it gives me trouble starting. My friend said something about maybe the kill switch in the car acting up, thought I'd throw that out there.

I just checked and the light saying that the amp is on does go off when the key is out, so the amp shouldn't still be on. I did notice though that sometimes the lights for one of the visors come on because the button that keeps them off doesn't have enough pressure pushing it down all the time. So I"m going to try and take care of that. Could those really drain the battery much if they were on?

yes if it is left on long enough. its just the same as leaving the dome light on.

check ashtrays, gloveboxes, and maplights.....make sure everything is off. Another culprit is the sunvisor mirror lights, make sure the visor is closed

Maybe upgrade to a bigger alternator. You may be running too much power for the stocker to keep up.

or a cap for the amp

Do you have access to a multi-meter?

You are going to want to remove the negative wire off the battery and hook the meter up in series and test for DC Amps. With everything off you want to shoot for less than 1 amp of draw. If you have more than that start pulling fuses or isolating your stereo to track down the draw. Common culprits are underhood lights, glovebox lights and vanity lights.

If you have no draw, you may have a weak battery or alternator. With an aftermarket stereo, you should consider a 130AMp 3g or 6G upgrade. If you have pullies on, install an overdrive alt pulley.

You can have the amt and battery bench tested.
