How to do it?(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: PocketThunder Hello, I'd like to put a 1990 GT drivetrain in a 1966 V8 (currently 302) Mustang. The drivetrain is a 5.0L, 5 speed, posi rear. (is posi a ford term also?) Anyways, will this be a simple drop in and bolt up with minor modifications? I question the following: Engine would mount in the same location? Rear end would be the same width? I can get a driveshaft made no problem to make up for any differences in drivetrain length. Thanks in advance for your input. Paul in St. Paul, MN Posted by: retroboss it should be a pretty easy swap. you need a different shaft because the 66 is a bit longer i believe. but other then that the only thing you might need is some transmission brackets for relocating it if there different. i put a 94 drive train in a 69 a while ago and didnt have much trouble. Posted by: 69stang The rearend out of the '90 GT is a 8.8 and will not bolt in without extensive modification to your '66. Your '66 uses the leaf springs to locate the rearend, bu the '90 GT uses upper and lower control arms. Posted by: Aussie XAXB "Posi" is a GM term, Ford uses "Traction-Lok". Mopar uses "Sure Grip". Steve P.S. "Lok" is the Ford term, not "Lock". It's a trade name. Posted by: droff85 you will have to buy a trans mount for the t5 you are planning on putting in there regardless if your 66 was a stick or not. also youll have either swap the manual clutch linkage in your car (if it was a stick) for cable actuated clutch. your linkage will not work. yes you will have to shorten the drive shaft because a t5 is longer than the old toploader 3 or 4 speeds. the 8.8 will not work unless like 69stang said you do extensive mods to either your body or the axle housing its self. which you dont want to touch or weld on an axle housing much due to the metal flexing. but other than the rear axle and the trans mount the engine will bolt right up. now if you are planning on keeping the fuel injection be sure to keep all your connectors marked so you can reconnect them without any problem.
