I recently decided to buy a car to work on and found a 67 mustang convertable with 289 4-speed. I dont have much experience with these cars so i have lots of questions. I was wondering how much power can go under the hood befor things start to twist and break. I have found some impressive stroker motors online with around 475-500 hp. Is that too much or ok. They are all small blocks so they will fit, but will it destroy the car. I figures this would be a good place to start finding info.

67's and up had a big block 390 option, so front end weight shouldn't be too much of a consideration as long as you change springs and upgrade brakes.

how much engine the car can handle has a lot to do with how it is set up and the condition of the body, mostly do you have a posi or a locking rear and what gears are you using. I bent the frame of a 67 fastback with a stock 351C the car was capible of the power most of the time, until I dropped the clutch hard on hot sticky new pavement. I'd say if you stay away from slicks you should be able to handle 400hp. but if you drop the gear ratios and go drag racing you need help. definately buy an export brace for under the hood to strengthen the shock towers and front frame. it's cheap and easy. It helps to take the weight off the towers by jacking up the car under the crossmember to get them in. this allow the shock towers to expand and the mounting holes should line up better. If it wouldn't go, the shock towers are sagging in already and you need to spread them out. subframe connectors would be good too.
