Do I have to be driving a Mustang to go to the picnic?

I think that I might not take the Mustang tomorrow. During the VT trip I noticed that there was a little overheating going on when we arrived at Harpoon and we were cruising in going slow. Thought that it was just that my idle was set too low. I just took the car out to get gas for tomorrow (because I haven't used it since Harpoon) and I was driving 25-30 down a roadthey are repaving and the car started over heating.
I know the first thing to try is a fan shrowd, but I just haven't had time. Someone suggested maybe the water pump is going? Does this sound like a possability? There is plenty of radiator fluid in it, I put some in right before heading up to VT.
Anyway, I think that I might have to drive my Escape tomorrow, or Jen's Mini, which would be perfered?

Bring either!! Escape is a Ford!

Bring the mini. I'll pull up next to it and rev and suck it into my intake!

Bring the 'stang, there will be enough of us there to do a tear down on the car...

Note on overheating ALWAYS go for easy stuff first.
First is rad cap. For every pound of pressure you use, it raises the boiling point 13 degrees. Next is lower rad hose collasping under speed, especially if no spring in it. Next would be intermittant sticking thermostat.
If you rule out all that THEN consider a dirty, clogged radiator. I only consider waterpump if it's leaking. Not leaking, look elsewhere. It's possible but not likely unless you've ruled out the other stuff. My .02
A fan shroud helps of course, but more for a weaker system or extreme heat conditions.

is it a clutch fan?

Thanks, sorry I didn't bring the car up today. Good thing because driving down Rt 1 would have killd it I think.
Jay to answer your question, it's an automatic car. The fan is linked directly without a clutch.
I will start looking into it soon, I hope.
Thanks again
Todd

I'm not a mechanic, and never said that I was even close!! Anyway, I unfortunately won't be around this weekend. It's a big weekend in my family, nephew b-day, parent's anniversary and an Old Home Day that I was supposed to be in with the Mustang.
But I should be around the weekend after. I was going to order a bunch of parts this week to get started (thermostat, new housing because I want a new one, may be new hoses just to do while I'm messing with everything else too).
Thanks for offering to help, let me know if you are around the weekend after next.

I can be around :-)

I did go to school for auto tech :-) and am MORE than happy to help keep a classic going :-)

Let me know where and when, and what tools I should bring.

Thanks again!

Edit: CRAP!! Just remembered that I'm driving down to Pitsburg that weekend. I didn't realize that Labor Day weekend was already here!!!!

Cool, tues and Thursdays I get out around 5ish. If you can do that. I'm ordering the parts right now.
I know about Fun Spot and I will be there for that with the car!! There isn't too much slow driving to get up there so I should be fine.
