I hate the roads of Mass ?

I hit a pothole with my daily driver (now known as the FORMER daily driver) and this hole did $900 damage to my poor car. (snapped a subframe, bent an A-arm and trashed the ball joint) I hit this monster with my brakes locked up so my wheels didnt "roll" with the hit.

This happened about a week and a half ago, but my mechanic was on vaca so I didnt hear from him about it till today.
The pothole has since been "patched" . but even if it werent, Mass highways are "pass at own risk" its in the books, so I cant sue the state for damages.

SO. For a while my Mustang will be my daily commuter vehicle, till I can afford to replace the now fallen Zuk.

*end rant* I feel better now

Same thing happened to me a couple years ago. Driving my Focus with 16" rims on 495 (right at the end of construction under Rt 4 in Chelmsford). Bent the rim so I needed a new one, $250 factory rim, made a HUGE goose egg in the tire so needed a new one, $150ish. went and took pics of the pot hole and when I was, there were 3 cars a little further down that had flats because of it. Called the highway department and they got back to me a couple weeks later and told me that it wasn't in a construction zone so they weren't responsible, went back, they moved the signs to just before the pot hole!!! Not as bad of damage as you, but to a kid in college at the time, it was a lot!!

I've bent one of my 17" bullitt wheels on a pothole.

$100 for a new rim. Not bad considering.

Got a flat in the Bullitt on an unmarked pothole in construction a couple years back. New tire, new wheel, and new wheel bearing on that side. I was none too happy.

Sometimes you have a give alittle. If only there were more jobs in NH, our roads wouldn't be so crowded and beat up.

I think this is a beef you should take up with NH, not MA.

MORE JOBS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE!!

+1. I'd rather not drive almost 70 miles per day down to Burlington, but it's a good job and good pay and benefits. You win here, you lose there.

Mass still wouldnt fix the roads.... How long have they had the stretch of 93 in methuen torn up ? In the time it took mass to resurface that one streatch, NH created a whole new ramp for exit one !

if you hate MA that much, stay out of it People who sue the state becuase they hit a pothole are half the problem.

I love when people compare the DOT and road systemof NH to MA, it cracks me up. MA has A LOT more drivers/population and 10x the amount of roads to maintain and fix, comparing the two is rediculous.

Ian I couldn't agree more.
Your insurance should cover it. You hit something in the road...

Not to add fuel to the fire, but.....

MA does have a lot more drivers. However, they also get income tax from anyone who works in Mass, (even if they're not MA residents) a Sales Tax, plus they get a ludicrous "excise tax" on vehicles.
So, yes, they have more drivers, but they also should have a lot more money.

At least, they would if they didn't take 20 years to rebuild 495 in Lawrence (yes, it's been under construction since the mid 80s, when I moved up here from that area)
And also if they didn't spend 20 BILLION on the "Big Dig". WTF.

It's not about number of drivers, it's about how the funds are spent.
NH just has less corruption. (we're not supporting Whitey Bulger's resort in Monaco... LOL)

Just a small correction. Excise tax is a town tax, not a state tax.

MA calls it excise tax.... NH calls it a plate fee (registration fee)

True, but then who covers the deductible ? Then my insurance goes up on top of that.

Why should I have to dish out the cash to cover the states negligence. I shell out enough from my paycheck in the form of income tax.

For the record, if you get hurt, or you have something damaged on private property, the property owner is responsible. Why shouldnt the state be responsible when something happens on its property ?

Whatever. I remember getting dinged for something like $400 in Excise on my 87 GT (which I only paid $11,700 brand new) when I lived in Andover. I haven't paid that much for a plate fee with any car I've owned in NH for the last 20 years.

But even taking excise tax out of my argument, MA still makes FAR, FAR more money to fix roads with than NH. Especially considering something like 4 of 5 NH residents pay out of state income tax. Which potentially adds about an extra 600,000 taxpayers to Massachusetts coffers.
(Census: NH pop in 2006 = 1.3 mil, subtracting ages <18 and >65 leaves about 845,000 potential taxpayers, 4/5ths of which is about 676,000. I'm ignoring ME, VT and other state tax payers for simplicity)

MA roads do suck. BUT, I have to say they're better than RI roads. I hate having to drive down there when I'm at school, their roads are TERRIBLE.

Posted by: Mustang5L5

If you buy a used car Excise tax is tolerable.

This year i think they valued my '03 at $4000 and charged me $35. I wanna know what book value they are going by.

I think my last bill for my '88 was $15 or something like that.

If you have a new car though you are screwed and gotta pay $400-500. If you lease a car, the dealership pays the tax and then send you the bill.

ohhhh quichyurbitchin, you only drive on what, two roads in Rhode Island?? lol.........try having to drive on Plymouth ave. in Fall river, now theres a rollerr coaster. I can honestly say that mass roads contributed to me having to replace my drivers side Tokico strut on my 95 Cobra after only 2 years of use.
I have to say about the worst of Rhode Islands roads that I've experienced; the "S" curve southbound on 95 in Providence that goes right by the 94.1 radio station building. in the far left lane the sewer gratings are death for shocks/struts because they're mounted halfway into the pavement for that lane and not at all level with the pavement itself.

Those two roads suck! BTW, I don't consider Fall River part of MA lol.

The equation used for the excise value is really weird. It doesn't actually have to do with the value of the car in it's current state.
