Tire advice needed

I've been running Kumho Ecsta 712s for a few years now, and they did well for me. But they're running out of tread, and the latest mods have left them spinning much too often. They are a stiff tire and I've had to run 35lbs on all four corners to get the rubber on the road, but they handle REALLY well.

Generally I want something that hooks better, but I don't drag race my car, so I don't want or need DRs for anything. I built up my car as a N/A road racer, not a straight line car. What I'm really looking for is something that handles well and has decent hook, but can be safely driven in the rain on the highway now and then when I get caught by the weather. No need for winter use.

The hitch is that I'm looking for 255ZR4017 for the front and 275ZR4017 for the rear, which limits the choices quite a bit. From what I've seen so far, I've been looking at the Yokohama S.drive. Anyone know anything about them? Other suggestion welcome if they come in my sizes.

I was going to suggest the NITTO 555's but they don't offer the REAR spec your looking for. I only other comprable choice would be BF Goodwrich G-force Sport.

Discount Tire Direct was running a promotion on the fordgt500.com forum offering a 10% off discount not to long ago. I picked up a set as a result.

PS: 35lbs for you tires seems quite hard.
Ford spec'd 32lbs for my 07 GT500, but I found 28lbs. for the rears to be just right.

All I can say is I had 2 Kumho 712s up front on my car. 1 developed a bubble on the sidewall after about 3 months, the other lasted about 9 months before it developed a bubble the size of a golf ball on the Tread area!
Not cool, and ZERO Guarantee/Warranty. I will never buy Kumho again.

I've had mine for years and put over 40K miles on them. I love 'em, but they just aren't sticky enough after the new mods and the tread is getting down there (finally). I'm sure I would have a different feeling about them if I had had your experience.

Just curious, do you remember what pressure were you running in them? Sounds lilke they may have been overheating? I never ran mine for long at less than 35lb. They handled like crap when I first got them and ran them at 28 or 30, so I posted my problem and got told to run them at 35lb and they worked great for me that way for about 6 years now.

I agree. I thought so, too, when this was recommended to me by multiple folks on another forum. I tried a bunch of different pressures, and found that they were right about it. It's those Kumho tires, not the car. They are just very, very stiff and it takes that much pressure to force the center of the tire down onto the road. I got great handling and very even tire wear with 35lb. Surprised the heck out of me when they turned out to be correct.

If you are looking for the best, as Bob mentioned, go with G Force TA KD's or KDW's. Exspensive, but very good.

You definitely won't hear me saying anything bad about any of those tires. Unfortunately neither the KD nor the KDW come in the sizes I'm looking for. They were my first choice.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 does come in the correct sizes, but I have had problems in the past getting Goodyear to make good on their warranties, so I generally try to avoid them. Twice burned makes me very cautious where Goodyear is concerned. But I haven't ruled them out yet.

I have been running toyo proxe 4's and I have to say I am happy with them. They are a bit pricey but shouldn't be as bad in a 17 series and I believe they are worth the money. I believe jeff and gang over at wheels replica in texas will treat ya right and you would have your tires shipped in 5 days or less. They carry all brands if toyo don't make ya all warm in fuzzy inside so give them a try and tell them joe from manchester sent ya there way and they will do it right.
There number is 1-888-449-4335 ask for jeff the wheel designer or gregg one of the salesmen.
