What do you guys like and dislike about selling cars & parts on Ebay ?

Posted by: jpmadman

the cost. its cheap for anything non-auto related but you get screwed with anything auto related if you dont make the sale you end up losing alot.

at least thats how it was a while back. maybe they have changed it now.

Posted by: MCRPARTS

Yah, it's 1.00 to list and then 89.00-109.00 once someone bids on your car or truck.Gets expensive.Even with used parts they nickle and dime yah to death.

I've made some decent money with ebay. I have part sitting around i know i'll never use, so I justtoss em on.

I hate the shipping calcs. Once i let ebay calculate postage for me based on zip code and the weight. it was way off! Ebay told the seller to send me $8 and actuall shipping was $10! Now i do a flat shipping fee but feel bad when i charge someone $5 and it costs $3. Meanwhile the same item sent somewhere else might cost $7 to ship. Now i know why people estimate high on shipping.

The fees such too...but what are you gonna do. These parts are just collecting dust for me

We have never purchased car parts on Ebay, but we did purchase a car. We will never do that again, unless it's close enough to view personally. The seller misrepresented the car. It was a nightmare. The seller said the car was clean with no filler, he also said the paint was a 9 out of 10. When the car arrived, from 50 feet I could see the wheel wells were misshapen and the paint had so many fish eyes I couldn't even count them all. Live and learn.

Biggest problem with buying virtually anything from Ebay now is that the prices are retail or higher. It used to be that you could find good deals because everyone was treating it like a 'yard sale", but now it's a lot of new stuff for retail+ prices, and even the used stuff is getting top dollar. No bargains anymore. You can usually find stuff cheaper elsewhere.

Posted by: Mustang5L5

Exactly. Everyone has an ebay store now where they just sell their products at retail or maybe a few bucks under.

I wish there was a way to eliminate the ebay stores and power sellers and just focus on auctions by regular people. That's where the deals are to be made.

definitly the shipping costs, too many sellers bury margin in the cost of the shipping and make buying a product look like a good deal only to find out the shipping cost is outrageous

Example:

I sold a set of calipers recently through ebay..i listed them for 80 bucks plus 35 for shipping. I had them initially listed $45 for shipping, but Ebay told me that my shipping costs were too high and I was trying to rip off the buyers.

then when I went to send the product out, UPS charged me 48 bucks so I wasn't able to recover all the money. Only made about 90 bucks as opposed to what I was looking for.

for the most part though, there are still TON's of killer deals on Ebay.

Ebay is the bomb.
I use it constamtly/
About the only thing I don't like is the fact that Sellers can no longer leave Neg feedback. What a crock of shlt that is!
I've never been told that my shipping is too high from Ebay. Ian, was it an email or what? You sure it was Ebay and not a fraud? There's A LOT of that going on lately.

Posted by: TorchRedSVT

PJ, it was a warning when I went to go list my item.

It said that my shipping costs were to high when compared with similiar items sold on Ebay, I was in violation of thier shipping T.O.S and that my item would need to be reviewed and possibly not posted.

Biggest problem I have had is people who really don't know what they have. The best example was an attempt to buy brake rotors. After shipping me three different sets of rotors, none of which could even be mounted on a Stang, the seller finally gave up. Fortunately it was a reputable seller who paid all of the shipping both ways, 'cause rotors are HEAVY!

Posted by: Mustang5L5

I got the same email warning once. I was selling a peice of jewlery from an Ex. (don't ask) and charged $5 for shipping and got the email that my cost was higher than similar items and may cause it to not be listed.

So i listed it at $3 and it cost me ~$4 to ship.

I was trying to buy some calipers on Ebay and this friggin guy wanted to charge me $45 for shipping! wtf!!

the GOOD---I've actually gotten some pretty good deals; the FRPP "super hi-torque" mini starter, the model number ending in B51 (more expensive one that lists for $289 retail), looked mint condition and I paid $101 shipped. My spare set of 94/95 "cobra" valve covers, $65 shipped. brand new silver 18x9 Saleen replica rims, $489 shipped (first set of them ever listed on Ebay too), I could go on forever on the awesome deals. they're still out there, just have to look harder.

the BAD------got ripped off almost $900 on a set of chrome 17x9 '95 Cobra "R" authentic from Ford rims and tires. I got my money back within 48 hours from VISA though. I also bought a CAI kit for my 97 Pontiac Sunfire (speaking of shipping rip-offs, the item was $5.99 plus $26.99 shipping which the seller stated was "non-refundable").....After proving to Paypal that the item wasn't designed for my car, Paypal refunded ALL of the money. the seller sent me a negative feedback stating "professional installation was recommended"----I had an ASE certified mechanic write an invoice for Paypal stating all the reasons why the kit would not work on my car lol......
last one, I accidentally sent a duplicate payment for an item because my computer froze during the first payment and it took the seller 3 weeks to send me a refund broken up into two partial payments minus Paypal fees---the kicker about this one was that the seller was known the world over for horrible communication and it was awesome when Paypal refunded me the money (yes, a duplicate refund) because the seller failed to respond to the calls for communication on my Paypal claim. to this day he hasn't noticed that he's refunded me twice for that item.

the UGLY------just yesterday I was duped out of an auction for a set of 94/95 Opal Frost mustang taillights (very rare color) because the seller sold them locally before the auction ended without stating in the auction that they were for sale locally in the first place. Apparently he put a note in the description that they were "sold locally" when there were no bids and then I bid on the item 2 minutes before the end time and right after that read his email saying they were sold. I had been watching this auction allllllllll week so I had no need to verify the item description before my last minute bid. I'm still pissed about that because Opal Frost parts almost NEVER show up on Ebay.

The bad:

Now, the seller can't leave negative feedback to the buyer so the buyer can essentially be a total dick without worrying about anything. That and idiots who expect something other than what you're selling, then cause problems for you later. Or the other idiots who pull the "i never got it" bullshit and use scare tactics to get you to work with them.

The good: I make enough from not even 20 hours a month to pay all my bills every month and then some. This includes after paying my ebay and PayPal fees, as well as any other costs incurred. Obviously despite the bullshit and fees it's much more GOOD than bad I can walk out of my job at any time and not give a shit.

What do you sell on Ebay dave?

Posted by: badass98svt

My guess would be polished stang parts

Posted by: Ozz

Yup, that and powdercoated Mustang parts I have a guy who hits up the scrap yards in his area and gets me stuff cheaper than I could ever even find them myself, sends me piles at a time, and I just go nuts.

I work closely w/a friend who owns a powdercoating business so I source that out to save me all the time and trouble w/that. Just drop off and pick up, and pay for some time and materials. The polishing I do myself, naturally.

Posted by: Mustang5L5

What's your ebay seller name? I'll have to check it out

Posted by: Ozz

mansonozz

I generate a ton of work through my auctions too, some people will run across something I have and inquire about having others done. I like that, then I can skip most the fees I'd get otherwise

Posted by: TorchRedSVT

wow, just checked out some of the items you have for sale right now and some of the stuff you have sold in the past....

nice work!!!

it noticed you do powdercoating....I may have some work for ya before summers end. When I am ready I'll shoot you a PM.

yeah, I'm the guy that sent you the email correcting the description about the power steering vs. crank pulley in one of your auctions lol.....I just took a look at the coil bracket on my 95 Cobra and saw your auction for a chrome powdercoated one------if you don't mind, please PM me your best price on it since its a "best offer" auction......thanks

Posted by: Ozz

Thanks Cobraman. The guy who sold it to me said it was a PS pulley. Whta do I know...I'm a Fox guy :p

At either rate it was sold out of auction to a guy who bought all my other SN95 stuff, so he knew what he was getting anyway. I think he's taking that coil bracket too, so I'll be out of them. I can coat yours for $15 including Priority shipping back to you though if you're interested.
