Is this a good set up and is there any problem finding replacement parts for this. Is the turbo any problem on this car and can I find a replacement for it. The car only has 58,000 original miles on it but it has been sitting in a barn for many years. Posted by: langod Hi Welcome to the site! That sounds like a great find! The old 4-banger Turbo Mustangs aren't real powerful by todays standards, but they are becoming highly collectible! I can't answer your questions -- just wanted to say "welcome" -- so hopefully some one else will jump in and speak up. Posted by: Aussie XAXB I am not sure but I think turbo parts are hard to come by, and I mean the actual turbo charger itself. I agree, the car has more value as a collectable. If it's in exceptional shape I would get it! Steve Posted by: langod Weird timing -- I just ran across this article: 1979 Ford Mustang Turbocharged 4 Cylinder - The Furious Four Posted by: Mustang5L5 It is a pretty rare car. I don't think the turbo parts are extremely rare though. It shares the basic fundamentals of the 2.3L driveline stuffed in the thunderbird turbo coupe and the SVO Mustang as well as the Merkur X4rti. They are not the exact same parts, but you can mix and match with a little research. The motor itself is weak. It's nowhere near SVO power. The head blows, the turbo manifold blows, the IHI turbo is a little on the small side. 84-86 SVO parts would be an upgrade in addition to the turbo coupes air-to-air intercooler. The motors can make upwards of 300-400HP, but will need some work to do. The car is rare though, i wouldn't touch it. I'd drive it as is Posted by: speedytang That early turbo car has a different turbo and carb setup. It is of the old Cougar/Thunderbird of the same years and was not a good turbo model and usually only lived 50k miles and smoked long before that. The nice thing is you can convert to the newer turbo unit and fuel injection and the 2.3 can be made bullet proof and many parts for those are around. Posted by: MCRPARTS Quote:
![]() My neighbor said he had a plain Jane 79 turbo car,and it was at the dealer every week getting fixed. He said he wishes he still had it now, they didn't make to many of those things.Wonder what the pace car numbers were. Posted by: Capriman86 www.foureyedpride.com is a great site for these 79-86 foureye'd cars. There are quite a few Pace owners there as well.
