Popping Out of Gear

Have 99 V6 with auto, recently started to pop out of gear while driving. Now it's sometimes staying in neutral when put into drive. Is there a way to adjust the shift cable? Or do I have a growing problem. Help, it's my daughter's car, enough said!!!

check your fluid level.

It's not called popping out of gear. It's called slipping. Have you done any maintainence to the trans? A flush? How many miles?

Fluid level is right on once warmed up. Car has 140K. No problem in reverse, second, or first. Only in drive. Back out of driveway, stop, place in drive, start to accelerate, car goes one foot and slips into neutral. If start in second and then shift to drive tranny fine until next stop, then same scenario. Owned car for 1.5 yrs, put approx. 15k on it since purchase, no tranny service done.

Definitely get the trans flushed. I bet it will help you out, especially if its still the original fluid.
Use a good quality fluid like Royal Purple

I originally thought this might be a linkage issue. But after re-reading Im thinking more along the lines of a sensor issue--seeing as our transmissions are very much controlled by the ECU. It could very well be a bad connection. There are just too many variables to allow a good diagnosis through the Forum. I would recommend bringing it to either a transmission specialty shop or the dealer. And do it before the problem intensifies.

If the transmission has NEVER had it's fluid changed, and is over 100K miles, then don't do it. That's asking for a problem. Bring it to a pro first

They will suggest either a rebuild or replace with an already rebuilt transmission.......just some ESP. It will cost at least $1,000.

If they are an honest shop it could just need a good flushing and new fluid. I say about a 30% chance of that but would be a good idea anyways. Since it does not like third gear it could be a problem with the passage of fluid to the clutch pack which could be fixed with flushing or it may need to have the valve body opened up, or more of the tranny opened. In the end it may still need a rebuild.

For everything that goes wrong on a car there is usually at least 5 different things that can cause it on modern cars. Good luck.

Steve
