Hey whats up people I have been having problems with my 1999 Mustang V6, here it is.

- I travel to work 55 miles oneway trip wich makes it 110 miles round trip.
- my care wastes 1/4 for oneway trip making 1/2 tank for round trip of 110 miles.

Now you will ask what have I done....

- Just did COMPLETE tune up.
- New Tires on original rims.

Now at this moment I dont know what to do it seems like if I putt water in my car instead of Gasoline, My car wastes gas "LIKE A FAT BITCH EATING CAKE."

Please help me cuz I dont know what to do now.

Isaias.

CAN A MOD PLEASE MOVE THIS THREAD TO CORRECT SECTION. PLEASE!!

well if a half tank is 110 miles, that puts you at 220 miles a tank, which is bad for a v6.

I do highway miles to go to work as well and i just did 321 miles to a tank of gas (14.5 gallons).

When you say complete tune up, what exactly did you change? Have you pulled the engine codes to see if anything is stored? not all codes trip the CEL light. What is your tire pressure? Did you change the fuel filter? How are you driving? Are you using 5th gear (or O/D with auto)?

I took the car to GoodYear and they told me they were going to do a complete tune-up they even charged me about $75.00 more.

How do I pull the Engine Codes?

What is your tire pressure?
Tire pressure is whats recomended in Manual.

Did you change the fuel filter?
Yes Fuel filter was changed.

How are you driving?

Well were I live when I go to work I hit "Rush hour traffic" both ways so even if I wanted I cant speed, since traffic is bumper to bumper.

Are you using 5th gear (or O/D with auto)?

My car is Manual so do use 5th.

take it to autozone and have them use the handheld computer programmer (its orange) and they will tell you whats wrong with it

I'd recommend instead to take it to the dealer and have them diagnose it. It'll be more expensive, but at least they can fix the problems and have the expertise right there. I wouldn't trust the Autozone dorks to add washer fluid, let alone fix anything.

im not saying fix it...but they can direct u in the right direction by telling you the codes and what they mean...they wouldnt try and fix it...its against their regulations

So do you have a list of what they changed for $75?

I hugely agree with Langod on this one. I work at Advance and at a shop, and I can tell you, nobody should give this free "service". It's an invitation for unqualified people to see that their car has a code, and then spend more money on parts then they could've spent having a qualified technician fix the problem. DTCs, or diagnostic trouble codes, are there for the sole purpose of allowing a qualified technician a direction to head first. It is by no means an answer, just an starting point for proper diagnosis.

what kind of mileage did you have before and what kind of mods do you have on your car?

i was getting 220-230 on my car with heavy traffic driving

oh and what would you concider the correct section? this is about v6's so i would say leave it in this section, i guess it could go into general tech, but let see if we can fix your problem first

I moved it OUT of the 4.6 section this morning just before you posted.
He hasn't edited his post yet.

No worries.

ok, yea i thought i saw it in the 4.6, but then i thought, "gee i mist be falling down on my admin duties and exbamagal may take the whip to me

Another week of driving done.

283 miles on 12.4 gallons = 23ish MPG. Not bad with a V8 in stop and go traffic

The term "Tune-up" is incredibly outdated. What it was, back in the day was:

Checking points and setting point gap, replacing if neccessary.

Replacing the condensor, if necessary.

Measuring Dwell.

Setting initial timing.

Cleaning carburetor and choke.

Replacing distributor cap and rotor.

Adjusting choke.

Replacing spark plugs.

Of course there were other general inspections such as the heat riser tube going to the air cleaner, and others.

What in the above list can even still be done to a car???

Checking points and setting point gap, replacing if neccessary.
No such component anymore

Replacing the condensor, if necessary.
No such component anymore

Measuring Dwell.
Irrelevent

Setting initial timing.
Impossible on most cars.

Cleaning carburetor and choke.
You can clean the throttle body but it doesn't have any fuel flowing through it like a carb.

Replacing distributor cap and rotor.
Don't exist on most engines anymore

Adjusting choke.
Doesn't exist anymore.

Replacing spark plugs.
They still change these with a tune-up, I think. You pay about $12 dollars or more each for this.

So just what do you really get with a tune-up? Overpriced spark plugs and a new fuel filter. They will probably check for trouble codes. At least for the price they are raping you at I would hope so.

Eh, you'd enjoy it too much

I get about 330 miles per tank in my 6 and only have CAI and exhaust.

Isaias,

I'm assuming this problem is a new one.

What did you get before you noticed the poor mileage?

Are you still running the stock exhaust system?

On my 2006 V6, I replaced the stock can with full duals and my average mileage shot up by 2 MPG overall.

On my best behavior I can top 31 MPG.

But that is boring.

I normally average 27-28 on my 190 mile daily commute.

On a Mustang Cruise down to CT, I averaged 27.1 for the 500 mile day, as you can see I did NOT baby it that day...

http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6248554

This included: Idling in traffic, rev-offs, a few WOT bursts, locking out 5th to keep the pipes loud, highway driving and city/country travel.

Switching to duals also eliminated a widespread problem with early S197 V6's: Hesitation After Long Cruise: TSB 06-9-9.

The new fuel pump did NOT fix it, the duals DID!

If you are still running stock, get a low restriction muffler.

Worst case, it doesn't improve mileage, but it will sound better.

Good luck.
