CAI Question?

Is there much of a difference between having just a K&N Drop in filter and the stock housing and setup from factory compared to like a MAC CAI Chrome tubing and filter setup?

Is there much hp increase compared between the 2 setups, or is it just eye candy under the hood?

Thanks!

There's almost no HP difference. If you don't care about the look -- just get the K&N drop-in. I put the K&N FIPK II on my car and was able to dyno before and after. If I remember, it was 2 hp.

Ha! I have the MAC CAI chrome tubing WITH the K&N filter lol You really can't tell a difference though, other than the occasional whistle

The K&N drop-in as Langod said, is damn near the same HP gain as a CAI. Maybe a 1 or 2 HP difference.
Try to stay away from the Metal/chrome CAI's. The metal under the hood heats up like crazy, causing your COLD air intake to become a HOT air intake.

If you decide to go with a CAI, www.jlttruecoldair.com makes a couple very nice setups, as well as www.wmsracing.com

The pic isn't working on that link, but it's basically the same as this.

You can also buy the lower piece, that puts the filter in the fender.

Yes, these pieces ARE metal, but they are ceramic coated, which helps keep things cool.

Here's a pic of the WMS piece on my car

The JLT pieces you can have painted to match your cars color.

Thanks man, I had a denscharger that was in the fenderwell years ago in my lil ole 98 v6, and also had the most commonly MAC CAI as Tiff mentioned above and got more of a whistle out of it than anything, people thought I had a S/C located in my fender *L*, which basically drove me nutz, so just getting some ideas here...

Yeah I was liking the JLT CAI when I was looking around yesterday, rather pricey from what I saw, close to $180-190. I was thinking of getting one of the JLT setups, and have it painted the same color as my car of RedFire/Burgandy, and maybe have some foose like flames from the fender area to midway of the pipe...would really be different

Thanks for the info, will check them out for sure!

BTW: The exhaust is on and sounds great P.J., Thanks!

you want the one that goes in the fender or you are just sucking hot air from the engine compartment,

Not necessarily true. A good engine compartment CAI will have a heat shield. See the attached pic of my K&N. And since it sits right up against the fenderwell where the snorkle used to be, it's pulling the air from the fender anyway.
Besides, I preferred the look of the K&N inside the engine compartmnet.

I like the whistle!!! Of course, after driving a supercharged truck for nearly a year I can say that anyone who thinks THAT whistle sounds like a supercharger they're NUTS!! lol

I love the whistle as well! I was at the All Ford Show last weekend with my hood open and some older guy was like this is just a V6? I was like yeah, but it doesn't sound like one. Then He's like I bet with that CAI. Last time I checked the exhaust gave it that sound!
