Alternator problem????

My car was stranded 30 miles from home...alternator died...so I got a ride home from my bud in his 00 GT coupe...

I had to wait till tomorrow to get my new alternator under warranty...but I didnt wanna leave my car stranded...

we took the alternator from my buddys GT, drove it down to my car..installed it..and he followed me in his dads car all the way back to my house

we then took the alternator back out and reinstalled it in his car...on his drive home...the battery warning light lit up everytime he gave the car gas or hit bumps...then when he got really close to home..the battery warning light stayed steady red

what could be wrong with his car..his battery is brand spankin new and the alternator was workin fine earlier that day too...

how would I test the system with a voltmeter?

My recommendation is to re-check your connections and make sure everything is tight.

Simple. Start the car, turn on all accessories, and bring the RPMs to 2500. Then put the positive lead of the voltmeter on battery positive, and put the negative on negative. Should be somewhere around 14.5v. Much less than that, there's a charging problem. Could be a circuit issue, but most likely an alternator. The voltage regulator specifically in Fords kinda sucks. The reason the alternator failed on your buddy's car on the ride home was most likely due to the fact that it was essentially full fielding itself to try and keep your car alive. Probably killed that one. Any case, yank it out and bring it to Advance or Auto Zone and have them test it if your on car test turns bad.

my friends a douche...I asked him yesterday if we tightened everything..and he said yes..

today..I went to his house and check it out..and the gray connector to the alternator was loose...that dumbars was suppose to hook it up last nite while I was remounting his battery...thats why the bettery light kept lighting up everytime he hit a bump

I hate the way he works on cars...he's the type that always makes things a rush..and bust his knuckles and junk...and always end up screwing something else up when workin on another thing

like i tell him to slow down and take his time...use the right tools and junk and everything will come off or bolt on fine...nope, instead of sockets..he tries a vice grip or some other random too...

That's pretty funny. Well, at least you don't owe him an alternator.
