Calling for Help! Clicking from Motor...

Any advise or Gpersonal experience would be appreciated... I have owned a 2005 Mustang GT 4.6 since Jan 2005 and I just purchased a 1999 Mustang GT also a 4.6L, SOHC with a need for some TLC. It has K & N Intake.
My question is this: Has anyone had the same model/year and experienced a clicking/ticking sound from the Motor? I cannot tell if it's coming from the timing assembly, or if it's possibly a wrist-pin tick, or what's going on. I have recently taken it to several shops and nobody can seem to pinpoint what's going on without a complete teardown and inspect.
At this point I cannot afford to be out a few days without my car if it's not to repair the problem... Don't know if many of you are familiar with cost in WA but nobody will even consider a teardown/inspect without a few G's on the table-that's without a guarantee they can fix...

That said...There doesn't appear to be any loss in performance, there is no hard idling, no difficulty starting, etc. Just this metallic clicking/ticking sound. I've recently purchased additional performance upgrades but do not wish to install until I have resolved this problem before it becomes catastrophic... Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I've had a 2002 V6 and of course my 2005 V8 but I'm not the most familiar with this motor... Thanks for all your help! (There were no metallic deposits found in the oil when I drained it, however I noticed what appeared to be some aeration in the oil...so I cannot begin to speculate as to what may be causing this sound)

Mine is a 3.8 and I get a ticking from the motor area. We've determined it's an exhaust leak. Not sure if that's what you're experiencing or not.

Are we talking about the 2005? if so There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for a Ticking sound which has been traced to Lash adjusters in the Valve train. Not a complete tear down required for repair either. If it is the other car you were asking about I am not sure Different heads there that I know absolutely nothing about.

The 99's are notorious for having a noisy valve train. My 99 GT used to sound like a singer sewing machine. It was that way from the day I had it and for 3 years after that. No harm done...the valve guides/springs in that set up are just that way. I tried changing from 5w30 to 5w20 oil but that didn't make any difference either. The aeration you spoke could be due to their also notorius intake cover leaks. The plastic tends to give out under stress, so check and see if that might still fall under the recall for that year.

Thank-you so very much for the advise! I will check that out... That certainly sounds like a much cheaper "problem" than these sounds can indicate. I really appreciate your advise! I also appreciate the suggestion to check the recall info-

Does the ticking happen at idle or only when you're riding down the road? Mine seems to only do it when I'm giving it gas.

Same here-If I give it gas, or while it's warming up. If the RPM's fall below 1000 or if I hit the Clutch and coast in Neutral it stops. This leads me to think that the previous post may be right on target with the Timing issue. How long has yours had the issue?

Posted by: ExBamaGal

Mine's been doing it for a couple of months now.

Could also be detonation. Try bumping the fuel up a couple octane points and see if that helps. I know that on occasion the 2Vs will do that after a bit. Also, if someone tuned the PCM previous to you owning it, they could've programmed it for 91 or 93.
