Piece of crap Grand Prix...help me...

Guys, I took my winter car for a good long ride yesterday. The car is a 1990 Grand Prix with a 3100 V6. I was about 1 hour from home when my car started running like complete shlt!
The transmission started shifting VERY poorly. When at low speeds, the trans shifts very hard, even if I give barely any gas.
At idle the car has a bad shake to it as well.
I'm thinking it could possibly be a bad spark plug wire. It feels like the motor has a "miss".
I CAN ALSO SMELL FUEL!
I NEED this car to get back and forth to work. My summer car is hibernating.

I went out and checked all the plug wires and they all seem fine. I think I will be changing the plugs this weekend. If that doesn't do it, then next comes the coil packs.
I honestly don't know, but the car is running like complete butt.
I can't afford this shlt right now.

PJ, don't go wasting your money on parts until you know what's wrong. Go buy some carb cleaner and spray it on your intake manifold where it connects to the block, all the vacuum hoses, and the fuel injectors right where the o-rings are and see if your idle changes. If your idle drops, you know where the problem is. Also, pull the plugs just to see what they look like. If they're white and ashy, it's running lean. Black and sooty means it's running rich. Does the car start right up, or does it crank for a while after letting it sit for the night? Take your test light and check the connections on the other connection of the coil packs, not the plug wires and see if you're getting voltage. Check all your fuel lines as well.

Well, I know its NOT a fuel issue because I can smell raw fuel.
The car starts up immediately in the morning. It never stalls either.
It's DEFINITELY not running on all 6 cylinders

Well then check for spark and air. Nothing worse than wasting money on parts you don't need.

PJ, you fix this toilet yet?

PS. Did you get the pinion seal replaced on the Cobra yet?

Yes, I repaired the GP yesterday.
It was the cyl. 1 and 4 coil pack. That bish was only running on 4 cylinders!
She runs like a sun of a gun now.
I also located a proper windshield wiper switch on Ebay and installed it the other day. That's fixed too!

I still need to replace the pinion seal on my Cobra. I also need to replace the lower balljoints. You wanna help?
The car's hibernating location has access to air tools.

I told you I'd be more than happy to replace your pinion seal for ya. I just need to buy the right torque wrench. I bought a turning torque wrench off the Mac truck, but I bought a foot pounds one by mistake!!

And yeah, I'll can help you with the ball joints too. I need to do mine sometime real soon as well.

Sweet. Yeah we need to replace your front control arms/ball joints.
I still have these Steeda X2s to install.
How much is a turning tq wrench, and what the hell does it look like. I have a reg. ft/lbs tq wrench.

$258 !!!!

Is the torque wrench absolutely required?

Posted by: bullitt5177

Yep. I have to check the pinion preload after I torque it normally. That's also Snap-On price (AKA rediculous), so I can either get it half off at school, or buy it off Matco or something.

Posted by: badass98svt

Sweet. I can't wait to get that done. I'm afraid i'm gonna lose too much fluid.

Posted by: bullitt5177

I'd recommend putting in some Royal Purple 75W-140. That's what I have and it kicks ass.

Posted by: badass98svt

Sure, I have one jug of RP already, so I guess I just need to buy 1 more, right?
I assume you want to wait until spring?

Posted by: bullitt5177

If the area is heated, I don't mind doing it earlier. The 8.8 takes 3.75 pints, so plan accordingly with that. Also, you need to go to the Ford stealership to pick up some friction modifier. I think it's less than $5 from them. You'll just need one tube.

Posted by: badass98svt

Where my car is stored is not heated, however their actual garage is.
But my car isn't in there.
Doesn't the RP already fave fric mod in it? i thought it did.

It has limited slip additive in it, which is different. And, if we're able to work in the garage, I'm up for it before spring.
