DSL vs Cable

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Right now we're on dial up and looking to upgrade. Since I know nothing about this, I thought someone may be able to shed a little light on it for me.

Which do you have? Pros/cons? Cost? Providers? Any info is appreciated.

I would highly suggest cable over DSL. We have Time Warner Road Runner and we're paying $39.95 per month witch isn't to bad at all. It has an always on connection and it has very little downtime.

Verizon dsl all the way. I have verizon @ home & i have the verizon card for my notebook.

Verizon DSL here.

No complaints and fast connection

How much is Verizon DHL?

Posted by: bdass92

VERIZON is 19.99 a month for PC & my card i pay 59.99 a month

Charter Cable here. fast 49.99 month

Ok peeps, here's the deal with cable -vs- dsl
I've had both.
Cable IS faster. But if your computer is not fast enough to support it, cable is no faster than dsl.
We got tired of paying $60 a month for Comcast Cable internet. We saw a Verizon commercial on TV for the dsl. At just $15 a month it's a much better alternative. And honestly, the cable internet wasn't any faster than the dsl on my laptop.

You have to pay for the card each month? That seems a little steep.

I've got Comcast cable (i think time warner bought them out?) and it's alot better than my friend that has DSL. Computer does play a part in it, what are your comp. specs?

free speed test

5 Mbps here on a 4 year old computer.

ExBamaGal -- See if you have Verizon FIOS in your area. It's their new fiber optic service. It includes broadband internet and local/LD telephone. In addition, they're partnered with Direct TV so they can bring you a complete replacement for your Cable company. I just signed up and I'm paying $95 month for Internet at 5Mbps (megabits per second) -- about 2x faster than my current cable internet, Local and long distance and the basic Direct TV package. That comes out to about $40 less than I was paying before for Adelphia Cable TV/Internet plus Verizon telephone service.

FIOS is faster than Cable which is faster than DSL. (FIOS is offered at 5 or 15Mbps, Cable is usually 3-5 and DSL is usually .5 to 1.5.)

Any reasonably current computer can easily handle any speed internet you have. I suspect the Badass98SVT was having some problems with his cable connection not related to the speed of his computer. (Although a slower computer with little RAM will have problems.)

Pros and cons:
FIOS
Pros - very fast (5 or 15 mbps packages available), full bandwidth to your house, fiber optic means less interference.
Cons - available in limited areas, you must convert your telephone service too. Requires Verizon to install new "fiber" cabling to your house.
CABLE
Pros - usually very fast and reliable
Cons - somewhat expensive. The whole neighborhood shares the main connection, so if everyone is online at the same time downloading MP3s, you will slow down. Cable companies aften suck at responding to and troubleshooting bandwidth problems.
DSL
Pros - cheap, 10-20x faster than dialup (usually .5 to 1.5 mbps), works over your regular copper phone lines.
Cons - much slower than Cable or FIOS, plus speed is very dependent on the distance you are from the Telephone company's "central switch", and they will use it as an "excuse" if you complain that the speed is not what you expected.

Thanks for the input ya'll. I found out that AT&T/Bellsouth (we have our phone with AT&T and they just merged) doesn't offer DSL in our area. Oh the perks of living in the middle of no where lol

I can get Roadrunner through TWC. I'll check into those others today.

StangChick...I did the speed test on our dial-up connection and the results are:

Communications 45 kilobits per second
Storage 5.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.1 minutes
Subjective rating Slow (lol)

That free test was cool.
I have cable, with an Alienware 'puter, and got a rating of "Awesome".

One thing concerns me though:

Subjective rating

This is a rating of your connection compared to all other connections worldwide. The scale used is one we made up.
One they made up........that cracks me up for some reason.

I don't pay for a card, just the montly $13 or whatever it is.

I have a wireless network in my house since we have 4 computers and 2 laptons. My computer is the central PC so it's directly connected but i'm also running the wireless router for everything else. I usually sit in bed and use the laptop at night while i watch TV or whatever it is i do at night

Cable is a much better technology as far as I'm concerned. I have Comcast and it's fantastic. I get the speed I'm supposed to get all the time, they don't care if I'm running 50 computers or 1 computer off the same connection (using a router), their customer support is the best I've ever used (and it's in the US!!), and I don't have to mess with stupid connection prompts when I turn on my computer like DSL. Cable is cheaper too. It may be a little different in other areas depending on service providors we only can get Comcast cable or Bellsouth DSL and Bellsouth DSL sucks (mainly because it's slow and expensive).

However, if you can get Verizon ViOS in your area, go for that.

That's not to bad at all... much better than what I'm paying for sure.

1.3 megabytes per second here.

Posted by: Mustang5L5

1.4 megabits per second for me with Verizon DSL.

And that's over my wireless router

Thanks for all the input guys/gals. I've checked around and the only thing I can find that's offered in our area is TWC cable. Soooo....we've got an appointment for Monday to get it hooked up They're running a special so it's going to be around $30/month for the first six months and then about $45 after that.

Posted by: 91RS

I forgot you were in NC, Time Warner would be your best bet. I've heard they are really good.

Posted by: ExBamaGal

Now with cable...

Communications 2.4 megabits per second
Storage 298.6 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.4 seconds
Subjective rating Great

What a difference!!!
